    Chapter 1

    Gabriel’s Announcement to Zechari’ah

1      There was in the days of Herod, king of Judea, a priest named Zechari’ah. He was in the order of ministry of Abi’jah. His wife Elizabeth was of the daughters of Aaron. Both were just before God and walked blamelessly in all the righteous precepts of the Lord. They were childless, because Elizabeth was barren. In addition, both were now advanced in age.

2      Now it occurred, as Zechari’ah performed the priestly duties of his order before God, according to the custom of the priestly office, that it fell to him by lot to enter the temple and burn incense. While a full assembly of people prayed outside at the hour of incense burning, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right of the altar of incense.

3   When Zechari’ah saw him, he was deeply disturbed, and fear fell heavily upon him. But the angel said, "Fear not, Zechari’ah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth shall bear a son, and you shall name him John. In this you will experience an exulted joy and many shall rejoice at his birth. He will be great in the sight of the Lord.

4   He must never drink wine or anything intoxicating. He shall be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb. He shall cause many of the sons of Israel to return to the Lord their God, and he will operate in the sight of God with the spiritual power of Eli’jah. Thus he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the stubborn to the wisdom of the just, to prepare a people who are ready for the Lord."

5      Zechari’ah said to the angel, How can I know this is true, for I am old and my wife is also at an advanced age? The angel answered him, "I am Gabriel and stand in the presence of God! I was sent to speak with you and bring you this good news.

6   Behold! you shall be silent, unable to speak, until the day on which these things take place, because you did not believe my words. Nonetheless, they shall be fulfilled in due season."

7   Meanwhile, the people waited for Zechari’ah, wondering why he was so long delayed in the temple. When he finally did come out, he was unable to speak. They realized he had seen an apparition in the temple. He motioned to them in signs, but remained mute. When the days of his ministry were fulfilled, he returned home.

8      Afterward, his wife Elizabeth conceived: and she hid it for five months, saying, In these days has the Lord taken notice of me to eliminate my reproach among men.

    Chapter 2

    Gabriel’s Announcement to Mary

1      In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy the angel Gabriel was sent to the city of Nazareth, which was in Galilee, to Mary, a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, who was of the kindred of David. The angel appeared to her and said, Rejoice, for you are favored by the Lord! You are blessed among women for the Lord is with you!

2   She was greatly troubled at his words, and she wondered what his salutation could mean. And the angel said to her, "Fear not, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold! you shall conceive and give birth to a son, and you shall name him Jesus.

3   He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God shall give Him the throne of His father David. He shall reign over the house of Jacob forever. There shall be no end of His kingdom."

4   Then said Mary to the angel, How can this be since I am a virgin? The angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you; thus the Holy One formed in you shall be called the Son of God.

5   Behold! Elizabeth, your relative, has conceived a son in her old age; she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. No declaration is impossible for God to fulfill."

6   Mary said, I am the Lord’s slave. According to your declaration may it be with me. And the angel left her.

7      Thereupon, Mary rose up and went hurriedly into a mountainous region, into a city of Judah. Here she entered the house of Zechari’ah and greeted Elizabeth.

8   When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby jumped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She shouted in a loud voice, saying to Mary, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!

9   How can it be that the mother of my Lord should come to me? The moment I heard your greeting, the baby in my womb jumped for joy. How happy is she who has believed that what the Lord has spoken to her would be fulfilled."

10   Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has regarded His humble slave. Behold! from now on all generations will consider my happiness, for the Powerful One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.

11   His mercy is for generation upon generation of those who fear Him. With His arm, He shows might. Those who are proud in the reasoning of their hearts, He scatters. He pulls rulers from their thrones and exalts the humble.

12   He fills the hungry with good things and sends the rich away empty-handed. He has given help to His son Israel, for He remembers the merciful promises He spoke to our fathers for the sake of Abraham and for his descendants forever."

13   And Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months before returning home.

    Chapter 3

    Birth of John the Baptist

1      Elizabeth’s time was fulfilled that she should deliver, and she gave birth to a son. When the neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had shown His mercy to her, they rejoiced with her.

2   When they came to circumcise the little boy on the eighth day, they started calling him by the name of his father Zechari’ah. However, his mother stopped them, saying, No! He shall be called John.

3   But they answered her, None of your relatives are called by that name. So they motioned to his father wanting to know what he would call the child. He requested a tablet, and they all marveled when he wrote, His name is John.

4   Instantly his mouth was opened and his tongue loosened, and he spoke out praises to God. Fear came upon all the neighbors, and these things were spoken of throughout the mountainous region of Judea. All who heard about it pondered in their hearts, What shall this little boy grow up to be? The hand of the Lord is with him.

5      And his father Zechari’ah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, for He visits and redeems His people. He has raised a horn of salvation for us in the house of His servant David. This is just as He spoke through the mouth of His holy prophets in the past, that we would have salvation from our enemies and would be delivered out of the hands of those who hate us.

6   He has shown mercy to our fathers, and remembers His holy covenant—the oath, which He swore to our father Abraham, to grant us a rescue out of the hand of our enemies, that we may offer divine service to Him in holiness and righteousness in His sight all our days.

7   And you, little boy, shall be called a prophet of the Most High, for you shall go before the Lord to prepare His roads. You shall provide His people with the knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of sin. This is by means of the merciful compassions of our God. The Dayspring from on high shall visit us, making His advent to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace."

8      And the little boy grew up steadfast in spirit and lived in the wilderness until the day he made his appearance to Israel.

    Chapter 4

    Birth of Jesus

1      The birth of Jesus Christ took place as follows: While Mary His mother was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be pregnant of the Holy Spirit. But Joseph her husband was a righteous man and unwilling to hold her up to public shame, so he intended to dismiss her secretly.

2   While he brooded over this, behold! an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to accept your wife Mary, for that which is conceived and being formed in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son, and you will call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.

3      All of this happened in fulfillment of what the Lord declared by the prophet, BEHOLD! A VIRGIN SHALL BE PREGNANT AND GIVE BIRTH TO A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME EMMAN’U-EL. Emman’u-el means, Our God is with us.

4   When Joseph arose from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had instructed; and he accepted Mary as his wife, and he kept her a virgin until she gave birth.

5      In those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the people of his empire should register, each in the city of their ancestors. This registration occurred when Quirin’i-us was governing Syria.

6   So Joseph also went up from Nazareth, in the land of Galilee, to Judea, into the city of David called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and kindred of David, to register with Mary, his betrothed wife, whose pregnancy was advanced.

7   While they were there the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped Him in swaddling clothes and cradled Him in a manger, because there had been no place for them to lodge.

8      There were in that region some shepherds in the field, maintaining watch over their flock during the night. And behold! an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of God shone about them; and they were gripped by fear.

9   And the angel said to them, Do not be afraid, for behold! I bring you good news of great joy, which shall be for all the people; for this day there has been born for you in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

10   Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and delight among men!

11   When the angels departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, We must go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.

12   They hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they saw Him they made known what had been declared to them concerning the little boy.

13   All who heard it marveled at the things the shepherds told them. And Mary preserved all these declarations, treasuring them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had seen and heard, just as it had been told them.

14       When the eight days to His circumcision were fulfilled, His name was called Jesus, as He had been called by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.
