Chapter One
Creator of Everything Beautiful
I n the beginning, God created man and gave him a mate
(Gen. 1:27). God had created Lucy’s mate on June 27, 1955, when Mitchell Joseph Olsen was born at Presbyterian Children’s Hospital on W. 168th Street in Upper Manhattan, New York. Two years later—or should I say one year and ten months later—Lucy Anderson was born on April 8, 1957, at Peninsula General Hospital in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. Lucy didn’t know that God had created Mitchell until much later in life. He allowed them to live happy childhoods and live out their separate lives.
Two worlds apart, yet so closely knit. They lived their separate lives until that miraculous day in Manhattan when God’s perfect plan unfolded and came into play as Lucy met her guardian angel. Here is where the story begins.
It was a cold November 1, 1983. Lucy, or Ms. Anderson, was the itinerant art specialist who visited fifteen schools in District 6, Manhattan, New York. She was a feisty young lady with a lot of artistic talent and very little patience. Lucy developed an art program titled the Visually Gifted Component of the Gifted and Talented Program. She worked over a year developing this program at the district office under the supervision of her mentor and friend, Evelyn. Ms. Anderson developed numerous artistic examinations in the visual and artistic forms. She then set up appointments to visit the fifteen local schools in which she would be implementing the program. In the meantime, she was working on her first master’s degree in fine arts and education while working full-time in the district.
Lucy didn’t know then that Mitchell had moved to Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, to teach PE after getting his master’s degree in education. He was there enjoying the sun and easy lifestyle when his father became ill. He decided that it was best if he moved back to Manhattan, New York, to help his parents. His father later lost his left leg due to poor circulation. Mitchell was a tremendous help to his parents. He became his father’s right hand, assisting him up and down the walk-up apartment that they lived in. Mitchell and his father were buddies. They discussed everything in life, including finding a special mate that Mitchell could share his aspirations and the easy, tropical island feel.
It was Friday, November 1, 1983. Lucy was picking up a group of students whom she would be taking to visit a local gallery so that the testing for her program would begin. As Ms. Anderson was lining up the students, a handsome six-foot-three blue-eyed blond Greek god was walking up the stairs. She saw an image coming up the stairs, looked quickly, and then really looked again! Wow, what a hunk. But he’s probably conceited, Ms. Anderson thought. As he approached the top of the stairs where she was standing, her heart started pounding a little faster. Maybe he’ll look my way, she thought. Nah, not interested in hunks right now, they’re too conceited, she continued, lost in her thoughts. He reached the top of the stairs and greeted the five-foot-one-and-a-half female frame wrapped in a parker with a red ribbon tied around her head. She appeared young but was quite elegant at the same time, thought Mitchell.
The tanned Greek god smiled as he passed Ms. Anderson, who busied herself with straightening the class line. The young lady looked up uninterested and returned the smile. She inadvertently watched as he kept walking, without calling attention to herself. Suddenly, he reached the door to the main office and turned back toward her. Oh goodness, he’s coming back. Should I smile or ignore him? she thought.
Hi,
resounded a voice from up above. Hi,
she responded shyly. Are you new around here?
he asked. No, I mean, yes. I’m . . . well, I’m here once a week,
Ms. Anderson retorted. Oh, I see
was his response. My name is Mitchell Olsen. I’m the PE teacher here. I’m coming up from lunch to check my mailbox.
He informed the young lady as she stood there thinking how gorgeous he was but was probably full of himself. Suddenly, with that, he extended his hand for a handshake and asked for her name. My name is Lucille Anderson, but my friends call me Lucy.
As she eagerly responded to the handshake. Hi, Lucy
was his response. So what brings you around here, at PS 178?
Mitchell asked. Well, I work in the district office, and I’ve developed a program titled the Visually Gifted Component of the Gifted and Talented Program. I’ve developed exams in the visual and performing arts for program inclusions. I travel to fifteen schools—elementary and junior high schools in the district. Now we’re getting ready to travel to a local gallery to see some of the paintings that will further motivate the new students in producing works of arts,
Lucy said in one breath. Hope to see you around here. I’ve got to go now
was his response. With that, he smiled an unbelievable smile, looked into her eyes, and went off, disappearing through the office door.
I think he likes you, Ms. Anderson,
said a little voice on the line. What are you talking about? I just met him
was her quick response. I think you might like him too. Right, Ms. Anderson?
asked another voice. We saw the way you both looked into each other’s eyes and smiled. That’s what they do in the movies,
piped in yet another voice. Now now, settle down and zip the lips and line up in a straight line so that we can start on our field trip,
responded Ms. Anderson.
As Ms. Anderson walked to the train station with her class, she thought about the Greek god she had just met but couldn’t remember his name. What was that teacher’s name again?
she found herself asking the class. Mr. Olsen. I think that’s what he said,
responded the children one by one. Yes, that’s it—Mr. Olsen. He teaches gym. He’s fun,
they all chimed in unison.
The rest of the day was uneventful. Ms.
