On a cold windy night, Daffony Murlette’s lifeless body was discovered, slain. Sustaining a wound to the head, she laid scattered on the floor. Blood slowly drenched onto the plush white carpet. Her stringy, damp hair partially hid her rigid face. The lips that were once full of life were pale and speechless. Her sodden, wide eyes stared into the entryway of her bedroom. That joyful, naïve, innocent spirit had abandoned her, leaving her body to perish. A bracelet decorated with ornaments of her life’s experiences dangled from her wrist. Chips of paint and blood underneath her nails proved she put up a struggle. The room was silent. Only the sound of the clattering rain against the window pane could be heard. The broken lamp behind her partially lit the room. Blithe detectives soon surrounded her, leaving muddy tracks to follow them. Rubber gloves covered with flims of dust powder tampered with her belongings. From every angle, flashing cameras took advantage of her twisted position. Flickering lights diffused the room, prying her most private possessions. The bedroom that was once a child’s dominion had tragically become a murder scene.

Officer Dolopis grabbed hold to the door knob. In great pain, he pulled himself up. He looked around then at his watch. He wondered how long he had been waiting there for backup. Stammering, he exited the room. He could see crooked pictures hanging in the hallway and tiny claws in the entryway of the door. He entered the living area to get past trafficing detectives. In transition, he bypassed the child’s shocked sibling. He could see an officer consoling her with comforting words. On his way out, Officer Dolopis observed the child’s father at the dining table. He calmly cooperated as an officer questioned him. Finally, Officer Dolopis reached the front porch and stepped out onto the lawn. From behind, the coroners slowly carried the body down on a stretcher. Finally reaching the front porch, Officer Dolopis stepped out onto the lawn.

He stood there for a moment to gather his senses. Like vultures, Chicago, Illinois news reporters ambushed him to get a story. Somehow, he pushed past the mob in an attempt to escape the crime scene. He managed to get through the gate. Downhearted, he stood there with his head held down. From a distance, he could hear a loud screeching noise. The only thing he could see were bright headlights swerving around a curb. Suddenly, the car pulled up in front of the house. Officer Dolopis put his hand up to block the blinding lights. He peeped his head around to get a better view. Only a dim side view could be seen but he knew it was a woman. She threw the car in park, grabbed a sack and leaped out of the car. Unsure of what to expect, she slowed her pace. She gripped the bag for comfort. The walk to the gate seemed so distant that night.

She covered her ears. The sound of sirens rattled her eardrums. There were police officers everywhere. In circular motion, flashing lights closed in. Yellow tape surrounded the house. By now, she was scared. Unknowingly, she dropped the groceries. Now taking desperate strides, she searched for her girls. Before she could get to the front gate, an officer blocked her path. Officer Dolopis stood back as he watched her attempt to get past. This is my house! Let me through! she cried. By then an officer approached her from behind to restrain her. Still holding her back, the officer said nothing. The sad expression on his face revealed all.

What’s going on? Why won’t you let me through? she pressed. I’m sorry Mam, but I can’t let you in. he finally answered in a trembling voice.

But I live here! This is my house! she yelled, struggling to get a lose from the other officer. Suddenly, she was calm. She spotted Officer Dolopis standing nearby. He stood there with his back turned to her. Pacing the dirt ground, he held his head down with both hands in his pockets. He was still out of touch with all that had happened. Unexpectedly, desperate hands grabbed hold
