Jerking to a sitting position, Pepper’s eyes flew open and her fingers clawed at her throat. Sweat beaded above her upper lip and she gasped when her throat relaxed enough to draw breath. Looking over Saint’s shoulder, she closed her eyes and bowed her head, taking slow deep breaths through her nose in an attempt to calm her racing heart. Opening her eyes again, she looked at the clock from the corner of her eye. She hated waking up at three a.m., but lately it seemed she was waking up every morning at exactly three a.m., her throat closed so tightly that she feared suffocation.
Easing back down, she was drifting back into sleep when she was jolted into awareness. Sitting up, she looked over at her sleeping husband and waited for his chest to rise.
