Who do you thank for soul? There are so many sources. Aside from The Creator, here are some of the people and institutions I would like to thank for brining soul into by life:

The late, great Georgie Woods (The Guy with the Goods), Hy Lit (Hyskie O’Roony), Jocko (On the Rocketship), Joe Tamburro (Butterball), Jimmy Bishop (J.B. the D.J.), Jerry Blavat (The Geator), Perry Johnson (The Doctor), Sonny Hopson (The Mighty Burner), Lloyd Fauntleroy, Don Kirschner and all of the D.J.s all over America.

God bless television, which embraced soul music so early. T.V. gave me a chance to see my heroes on shows like: The Discophonic Scene, Soul Train, The Hy Lit Show, Shindig, The Ed Sullivan Show, In Concert, BET-J, The Music Channel, The Hollywood Palace, On Broadway Tonight and every late night variety show.

A big thumbs up to the more than one hundred black colleges and universities who have always supported soul music. During my four years at Hampton, we saw so many groups that I can’t mention them all here. As long as there is the black college circuit, there will always be soul music.

Finally, I would like to thank my technical and support staff. Thank you, Sandy Moore, your typing skills are underappreciated. Jewel Berneiter, your copy editing can’t be beat. Kudos to manuscript artist Sue Grant of the Ardmore Business Center.

    Sincerely,

    A.C. Davis

    Foreword

Flashback to the newsroom of the Philadelphia Tribune during the late 90s. Tony Davis, our sportswriter, Don Hunt, and myself—all baby boomers who were born and raised in Greater Philadelphia—are enjoying one of our favorite pastimes—reminiscing about the amazing R&B that dominated the airwaves during our youth.

What about ‘Skintight?’ someone would chime in, and the three of us would immediately burst into song. you’re a bad, bad misses in your skintight britches. Running folks into ditches! Baby, you’re about to bust the stitches! After a brief rendition of the Ohio Players’ hit dance track, we would all giggle with glee.

Feeling inspired, I might offer up, Though you may not drive a great big Cadillac. Gangster Whitewall. TV antennas in the back! The guys would join me at the chorus with Diamond in the back, sunroof top! Diggin’ the scene with a gangster lean! Oooh-oooh!

In our friendly, ongoing competition for musical supremacy, Tony would occasionally have the audacity to challenge my vast knowledge of all things R&B. Who was the bass player for Booker T & the MGs? he might ask, certain that he’s finally stumbled upon the one bit of trivia that I didn’t know. Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn! I would answer triumphantly.

Undaunted, he would try again with something like, Okay. What group is now called Ray, Goodman & Brown? The Moments, I would answer. Is that the best you’ve got?

While his pathetic attempts at stumping me over the years have failed miserably, I must admit that Tony does knows a little something about the classic R&B that we have come to love, and The Baby Boomer’s SAT (The BBSAT"), a challenging and fun collection of
