    Preface

There is no shortage of books written in response to the retirement savings crisis in America. Many of these books offer all sorts of great advice about financial planning and counsel intended to help Americans adequately fund their retirement.

This is not another one of those books.

This book was written to educate American seniors about the hidden value of their life insurance policies. Our goal is to let you in on the details of a financial planning strategy that many seniors just like you have used to help fund their retirement and improve their quality of life in those precious golden years.

In fact, this strategy is so beneficial to seniors who no longer need or can afford their life insurance policies that many life insurance companies don’t want it to be known. Some even prohibit the agent who sold you the policy from telling you about this option.

The authors would not have been able to tell this story in the pages that follow without the assistance of Wesley Costa. Wesley provided valuable editorial input in the development of each chapter, offered important suggestions that improved the quality of the manuscript, and brought to bear his considerable creative skills to help illustrate various elements of the book. We are indebted to him for his contributions to this project.

Unfortunately, as a result of the unpredictable ups and downs of the financial markets -- combined with the low interest rates earned on CDs and treasury bonds -- his retirement savings haven’t produced the kind of income he had hoped. Meanwhile, Jim’s health has begun to decline a bit and he
