Memories of 9/11 - Mary Walsh
Foreword
The idea for this book came to me in 2020 when I read 11/22/63 by Stephen King - the day President Kennedy was assassinated. People of my parents’ generation always asked, Where were you when JFK was shot?
That got me thinking and I posed the question: Where were you when the towers fell on 9/11?
I asked friends and family to tell me their stories and word spread. This book is full of those memories.
Here’s mine:
I was 28 at the time and had just started working for a new company. They brought TVs into the one conference room and we watched the Towers fall on live TV. We stood there, dumbfounded, unsure of what we just saw was real. They allowed us to go home early that day. When I talked to my parents and siblings, I found out that my oldest cousin was in NYC on a business trip. Thankfully, he was safe but stranded. It took some finagling with a rental car and a bus company for him to get home because all planes were grounded and everyone was trying desperately to get out of the city. My best friend from high school called me a little while later. I hadn't talked to her in a year or so, but we hugged and cried through the phone. Within a couple of days, I had reached out to everyone I cared about to make sure that they and their families were safe. I didn't know anyone who died that day, but friends and family did. A friend of a friend was in the North Tower that day. He survived but many of his coworkers did not. I had heard he struggled with Survivor's Guilt for a long time after...

My 9/11 memories are far more vivid than the JFK assassination and not because they are more recent. My parents, Dad and [stepmother] Dorothy, had picked that day to go on vacation. They planned to fly to the West Coast, rent a car, and do sightseeing for several weeks. I knew no other details than that, no from or to, no hotels, etc. After all, they were adults and didn't need to report to me! Thus, when the
