Cowboy Passion for Two - Ellie Hunt

    Chapter One

Ruby wished she hadn’t worn heels to the July Fourth parade. They weren’t even real heels, just ankle boots with a two-inch rise, but she’d been standing on Main Street for an hour now, and the heavy camera equipment wasn’t helping.

Just another dumb city girl mistake. There had been a whole of those in Zoe’s first month in West Texas.

As she watched, Miss Odessa Ranch Queen rode up very, very slowly. She sat on top of the back seat of a convertible, complete with sparkly crown, shimmery gown, and sash. Ruby thought she was pretty in the way that seventeen year old girls from the middle of nowhere were pretty, but nothing particularly special. Ruby hefted her camera and snapped a few pictures as the car rode past. They were probably backlit and terrible, but that would teach the Odessa Dispatch-Times to send her instead of a real photographer.

The real photographer, Ray, had called in that morning with some sort of cow trouble. Ruby hadn’t understood what it was, and given that calving season was soon, she didn’t really want to know. In the mere month she’d been in Odessa, Texas, she’d already learned far more about cows than she ever cared to know.

She flipped through the pictures on the camera. A few of them weren’t terrible, at least, and she could write some nice things about the parade in general. It wasn’t like it was real news, but nothing in Odessa was real news. So far, the closest she’d gotten was a menu change at Dot’s Diner, where they now offered a kale salad — a strange, alien oddity to the area’s ranchers — and the price of coffee had been raised by ten cents.

Ruby was still standing in the road when a small army of men wearing almost-cartoonish cowboy gear and riding horses came through, and barely noticed them.

You ought to step back, said a voice next to her. We don’t need our star reporter gettin’ trampled, do we?

She obediently took a step back, onto the sidewalk, and looked over at Sheriff Bullock, known to the people of Odessa simply as Sheriff Jim.

    Sorry, she said.

He adjusted his cowboy hat and smiled at her. Horses are more dangerous than you’d think. Just tryin’ to help. His six-sided Sheriff’s badge, pinned to his chest, shone in the sunlight.

Ruby thought his whole Sheriff getup was kind of silly — the uniform, the big cowboy hat, the giant star on his chest that said SHERIFF — but she had to admit that he made it work, even if she didn’t want to. He filled the outfit out nicely, with broad shoulders and strong arms, and he was handsome enough that he was good-looking even in that hat.

Got any quotes for me? she asked, looking up at him.

He put both his hands on his hips and watched the parade for a minute, the men on horses still going past. We in Odessa are very proud of our little town, proud of our country, and pleased to celebrate two-hundred-odd-years of freedom, he said in an official-sounding voice. Also, we sure hope we don’t have that same greased pig incident as last year.

Ruby raised both her eyebrows. Greased pig? she asked. Her pen flew across her notebook. It was the most exciting thing she’d heard since getting to Odessa.

Some joker thought it would be funny to grease up a pig and set it loose in the parade, he said. His face was very, very serious. It was also pretty handsome. That sucker was five hundred pounds, easy, and slippery as an eel in butter. Raced through the whole parade, greasin’ up kids, last year’s ranch queen, the horses, everything. Downtown was a mess. Took all my deputies and half the fire department to catch that thing. We finally had to dogpile on top of it in Meyers Park, just down there. I don’t think I’ll ever get the grease out of my old uniform.

Are you worried that the same thing could happen today? asked Ruby.

Well, there’s always a chance that a greasy pig could be released at any time, said the Sheriff. He clapped her on the back and smiled, showing his white teeth. Zoe’s heart beat just a little bit faster. That’s why we’re asking the citizens of Odessa to remain vigilant and report any unchaperoned swine.

Of course, said Ruby, still scribbling. Have there been any incidents this year?

From a block away, she could hear the squalling of the marching band.

Nothing yet, said the Sheriff. But danger never sleeps. Keep an eye out.

Then, he winked at her. Ruby felt the heat rise to her face. Her pen, still writing, faltered. She hoped he didn’t notice.

With that, he moved down the parade route, shaking hands and
