About The Author
The Passenger
My name is Arthur Hemings. I am the Captain of a fishing ship that I have been running for about fifteen years with a loyal crew of twenty. I am writing this now as I find myself alone and marooned on this ship for hours. It is hard for me to even put on paper what I had experienced these past couple of days, but I will try my best with all of my strength left. It all began like any other day. I arrived to see my ship and my crew ready for work. As I got on my ship, I made a headcount of my crew and was glad to see that they were all accounted for and present. We packed the essentials: food, water, and ale. I tell my crew to set sail for the ocean to do out fishing. We go farther out into the vast blue ocean and the sun high above us. I inform my crew again to ready the fishing nets. It seems like something out of fiction in that we couldn't catch any fish. We were standing there for hours trying to understand what was happening. I tell my crew to head to shore and out of the Rift. Samuel steers us to course back home, but it seems like we were lost. Never in all my years of sailing and fishing would I have thought we would have been able to get lost in this Rift. My men grow frustrated while I grow with worry and fear. I tell one of my young men to go up to the crow's nest and see if he can spot any landmass. He yells out that he sees none, and at that moment, I get more scared. He goes on to say that there is no land for miles. I decided to huddle my crew together, and I explained our situation. I say to them that we must save what little food and water we have until we are either rescued or make our way back. As I said those words, I had a strange thought that we would never be found, that we would be lost in time.
Nevertheless, I tell my crew to get back in their positions and spot any land they see. As the waves hit and time goes by, I can feel the beating heart come off the sun, and Its rays penetrate my sweaty skin. I can feel the thirst and hunger, but I do not let myself submit to its temptation only so that my crew can get to eat and drink. As I sit in my Captain's cabin, I can hear one of my men arguing about our situation. Zachery, a man I hired over three months ago, seems very angry and blames me for getting lost in the Rift. I step out to see the commotion. Zachery yells about the heat and lack thereof food. I try to calm the poor soul and tell him that we will only be
