    Chapter One

I stared up at the brig as the masts rose dauntingly above me. Even with the cloudless blue sky beyond on this still, balmy July day, I felt a wobble of trepidation. Had I really signed up for this?

But there was no going back. Three weeks on a tall ship, the Aurora, a ship which had captured my heart and imagination ever since it had sailed into Falmouth on an equally hot day last year.

I cast my mind back twelve months.

    Twelve months ago

I’ll sail on her, I declared to Jenny as we stood on the quayside.

Yeah right. What, on some two hundred pounds booze cruise on the arm of Mr Right? Can’t see you doing it any other way, Becky.

I landed her a withering glare. I’ll have you know I can handle a tiller. I sailed at school.

She eyed me wearily. Taking a dinghy out on a reservoir isn’t the same as crewing on one of those things. It’s tough. The physical work aside, are you sure you can handle the conditions and loads of sweaty, smelly blokes crammed into a small space?

Depends who the sweaty blokes are, I suppose.

True. Any news from Tim? Jenny continued.

Nope. I tensed at the reminder.

    Sorry.

    I’m not.

I hadn’t seen my ex for weeks. After two increasingly tedious years together, it was a relief when it had ended. Tim had found someone new and I was enjoying life alone.

Finding another man was not my aim in joining the crew of the Aurora. I was between temping jobs and, as usual, modern life stifled and restricted me. There seemed little to keep me on terra firma. As an only child, whose parents had recently passed away, I didn’t even have family to keep me grounded. I craved freedom. What more freedom could a person want than an open sea and full sails? So I went looking for adventure on a tall ship.

    Present

After a fitness test and a two-day sea trial, I’d passed and been accepted on the crew of the Aurora. Now here I was, with a single packed bag, an open mind and a soul ready to be filled.

Becky, isn’t it? A voice jolted me out of my reverie. There was a man leaning on the ship’s rail.

    I nodded.

Come aboard! He smiled and beckoned to me.

Biting back my nerves, I made my way up the gangway. Immediately, the smell and gentle straining noises of the ship hit me. It was as if I was coming home.

I’m Jamie. I remember you from the trials. He held out a hand.

His strong grip almost made me wince but I smiled and met his eyes. Nice green eyes amidst a rugged face. He stared hard at me for a little longer than necessary.

I’m the second mate. The captain’s over here.

He led me over to the captain, a tanned man of about fifty, who was currently inspecting the rigging. He was dressed in a T-shirt stretched too tightly over a now-spreading waistline.

Jamie introduced me. Captain Frank, this is Becky Dymond, another recruit.

The captain smiled, an open, welcoming grin, his sun-wrinkled eyes twinkling warmly. Pleased to have you on board, Becky. You crewed before?

    Only on the training course.

There’s nothing to it. We’ll have you up the rigging in no time. He looked aloft.

I followed his gaze. The mast stretched above me, making me sway backwards and lose my footing. I grabbed hold of the rigging to steady myself. The two men laughed.

"Maybe not straight away though, hey? Jamie’ll show you your cabin. We’re all
