    Introduction

Mohandas Gandhi is called Father of the Nation. He is popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi spent twenty years in South Africa working to fight discrimination. It was there that he created his concept of satyagraha, a non-violent way of protesting against injustices. While in India, Gandhi’s obvious virtue, simplistic lifestyle, and minimal dress endeared him to the people. He spent his remaining years working diligently to remove British rule from India as well as for the betterment of lives of India’s poorest classes. Many civil rights leaders, including Nobel Laureate Martin Luther King Jr., used Gandhi’s concept of non-violent protest as a model for their own struggles.

He was the pioneer of Satyagraha—the resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience strongly founded upon ahimsa (total non-violence) — which led India to independence, and has inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world.

Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was born into a Hindu Modh Bania family in Porbandar, Gujarat, India on 2nd October 1869. He was the son of Karamchand Gandhi, the Diwan (Chief Minister) of Porbandar, and Putlibai, Karamchand’s fourth wife (his previous three wives had died in childbirth),
