About this ebook

Sassafras and Alcatraz are twins who couldn't be more different, except for the fact that they love their local library and their mother is best friends with the librarian. They sit in the library while their mother coaches their older brothers football team. The librarian, Ms Burns, tells them the Mayor is going to demolish the library to make way for a car park and there is nothing she can do about it. When Sass goes down to the basement for the packing boxes, she puts her hands on the old library files that hold the Dewey Decimal Cards and something magical happens. She calls the characters of the books to life. The library is helping them to find a way to fight. Can they find the right combination of characters, including the knights, pirates and scientists, to stop the council and save the library?

Sassafras snorted. ‘If I were in charge, things would be different. I would ban homework, make sleeping in an Olympic sport and Dad would never have to work on Saturdays.’ Her twin brother laughed for the first time that day. Alcatraz didn’t always agree with her, but he seemed to like how excited she got. Being twins, they both had a

pointed face and huge green eyes, but his were set slightly further apart and gazed seriously out from between two curtains of yellow hair.

‘There is no way I want you to be the leader of anything I am a part of, let alone a whole country,’ he said, but he nodded his head in agreement. ‘It would be a lot easier if Dad was home on weekends.’

Sass ran her hands through her mop of yellow curls, making them stand even more on end.

‘Ugh. Poor Dad,’ she said. ‘He would rather watch Max play footy than be cleaning the school.’

Rocking back and forth in his wheelchair, Traz gave his sister a crooked smile. Their parents owned a cleaning company which meant their Dad worked nights and weekends on commercial jobs

and their Mum worked at people’s houses while

    they were at school.

‘At least we don’t have to sit down there when he’s not here,’ said Traz, shrugging his shoulders and looking towards
