    Zach Slade tumbled out the open door of Tucker’s into the parking lot heels over head and landed hard on his back in the dirt. He lay there, waiting for his head to clear enough to try standing up, but the decision was not his to make. Strong hands grabbed him by the front of his dusty brown leather jacket and hauled him to his feet, where he stood unsteadily for a moment, until one of those hands curled itself into a fist and punched him in the side of the head. He went down again, this time on his belly, arms splayed out in front of him, and decided to stay there until other options presented themselves.

    The first option that deigned to make its presence known was the steel tip of a work boot, introducing itself to his ribs. Sharp pain radiated up his side, stealing the breath from his lungs, but on the positive side of things, his head cleared immediately, and he could see again. Well, sort of. There were two of just about everything. Which was a big improvement over shapeless colors and lights.
