In Memoriam

The van of the parade marched slowly down Main Street, six middle-aged men in military dress representing the branch of the armed forces they had served in and carrying the flag of their respective branch, except the center right who wore Army dress and carried the flag of the United States of America. They marched in silence, faces stern, followed at some distance by a convertible Chrysler Sebring that carried the Grand Marshall, Mayor Ed Carsten of Shore Point, New Jersey. He sat on top of the back seats by the trunk and waved to the scattering of people who had come out to watch the parade. He saw a few familiar faces and said hello to some by name as he passed. Shore Point was a town of barely eighteen-hundred people. Less than a hundred that had come out to support the parade.

The mayor’s car was followed by a loose gathering of men and a handful of women, twenty altogether, dressed in various military attire that, for the most part, still fit. A distance behind them was the ambulance
