Is the Bible Really True? - Bishop C. Horace Kitson
Foreword
If you should ask most believers, is the Bible really true? We would all say Of course
. Most of us have never examined this question. When Rodney, a 9 year old lad asked me that question, I immediately realized that I needed to do some research to get an answer to that question.
Many times we are intimidated by large books. Here is a small book written for you that seeks to answer that question without too much detail.
As you, hopefully discover that the Bible is true, it is my prayer that the many stories and truths found therein will fascinate you and cause you to grow and become that person who will greatly influence others.
Thanks to my dearest wife Dr. Lorna Kitson and our daughters, Ruth-Ann and Jo-Anne who have been a great inspiration to me. Thanks also to Dr. Samuel Gordon, who taught me so much at United Bible College and Theological Seminary.
Introduction
Throughout the history of man, concepts and theories have been updated, revised and even disapproved. Astronomers, doctors, scientists and various other disciplines keep discovering concepts thus rendering the former information, sometimes useless. ‘What makes something true?’ one may ask. According to Robin Lane Fox, a historian, Truth’s two pillars: coherence within the story and correspondence with facts outside
¹, will be used as our guideline to see if the Bible is really true.
Laws that govern our physical sphere of existence, like the Law of gravity, has been measured mathematically and used to enhance our way of life. The law of gravity therefore is true and will never change.
As I examine this subject, ‘Is the Bible really true,’ I will look at the Jewish people being chosen by God, scattered because of disobedience, returned under Ezra, and re-gathered in 1948.
We will look at a prophecy and how it could be the major proof of divine authorship of the Bible. We will look at Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, the interpretation and the fulfillment of the dream.
We will also examine some Messianic Prophecies. These prophecies will deal mainly with the lineage and birth of Messiah.
After the Messianic prophecies we will look at some archaeological findings and see if they support or disprove the historicity of the Bible. Science and the Bible, this could be a research in itself. However we will not get lost in this area but we will see in a broad sense whether science supports or contradicts the Bible. In looking at miscellaneous facts about the Bible, we’ll look briefly at Noah’s Ark and eating God’s way. In closing this section I will share my personal testimony.
It is my prayer that this research will serve to strengthen the faith of many and help others to come to the knowledge of the truth. Above everything else, I pray that this will be a legacy for my daughters and also my grand children.
As we examine arguments that attempt to disprove the Bible, you, the readers of this work are the jury. Hopefully you’ll find enough facts to help you come to a reasonable conclusion. I will proceed firstly to look at the Jewish people and see what we can learn about the subject ‘Is the Bible really true’.
CHAPTER 1
Historical Perspective on the Bible
The Bible is a library of sixty-six books. Finis Dake, a noted Bible student says, It is the record of God’s dealings with man; past, present, and future.
¹ Another noted Bible scholar, Clarence Larkins said It is a Revelation of God, of the Fall of Man, the Way of Salvation, and of God’s Plan and Purpose in the Ages
². Another author, Arthur W. Kac says, "Let us also remember this, that for Israel to accomplish her mission to the world while being exiled from the Land of Israel is an utter contradiction. Israel can never fulfill her Divinely- appointed mission if she is not right with God. And to be exiled from the Land of Israel is for Israel, as a nation, to be exiled from God. The Bible, then, is God
