    Francis sat on the fire escape in a foldout chair. He slipped a cigarette between his lips, took a lighter from his pocket. Flick, and the flame lit up the darkness, and warmed the tip of his nose. Francis sucked, sucked, then put the lighter back in his pocket, exhaling an unseen cloud of bitter smoke.

    He looked down at the alleyway. He could see nothing. He looked left. In the light of the streetlamp he could see the corner of a brick building—Gma's Diner; they had good coffee—and the sidewalk, and the street. The street was silent. Not a car whizzed past. Not at this hour. All Francis could hear was the buzzzzzzz of the streetlamp.
