    Preface—The School of Life

In 1975, I decided as a young adult to become wealthy and successful, because being poor and mediocre sucked. I knew this from my own experience in life as well as through watching my parents struggle, and it was not the way I was going to continue to live my life. However, there were no classes and there were no teachers in high school or professors in college to specifically teach me how to achieve these two goals. My parents were economically disadvantaged middle-class people who loved me but didn’t have the knowledge, experience, or ability to educate me about achieving wealth and success. There were no mentors or how-to seminars that could provide a practical road map that I could follow.

There were many books written by different authors, and there were many seminars that discussed a variety of topics about self-improvement, financial and business success, career advancement, money management, health and exercise, and so on, but there were no books or other sources of information that concisely presented how one should live one’s life to achieve wealth and success. It’s important to note that my definition of success in life was not about making a lot of money or achieving fame and fortune. Instead, it was to live a balanced and harmonious life with plenty of health, happiness, and prosperity. I wanted to find my purpose in life. I wanted to become the best person I could be—with clear motivations, a definite idea of what happiness meant to me, and defined goals that I concretely accomplished—and I wanted to make a difference in the world.

So, the reason I wrote this book is that no one really teaches you the importance of living a balanced and harmonious life. No one teaches you the importance of achieving health, happiness, and prosperity. No one teaches you about the Seven Principles of Life and how they affect your life. No one teaches you about the VPAT (visualization, planning, action, and tracking) techniques to exercise your Power of Creation. And therefore, no one teaches you how to be wealthy and successful in life. Probably the reason no one teaches you is that most people don’t have the awareness, knowledge, or experience. Perhaps this explains why 1 percent of the world’s population controls over 50 percent of the wealth, and less than 10 percent achieve success as defined by living a balanced and harmonious life with health, happiness, and prosperity for themselves and their families.

The book was written under a pseudonym to focus the reader on the information and knowledge and not the author. Even though the characters in the stories, including Benjamin Franklin Smith and his mentors Grandpa John and Uncle Harry, are fictitious, the content of their stories is real—that is, I have taken real-life examples and given them to the characters we’ll be following. In fact, even my own role in the text is fictionalized. The anonymous nature of the characters was used to provide an element of entertainment while at the same time focusing on the importance of applying the knowledge. It took me forty-six years of research, study, and practice to acquire the knowledge of the Seven Principles of Life and VPAT techniques that I present for your benefit.

My personal life’s journey has had its share of painful mistakes, hardships, and obstacles. My goals early in life were to become the best person I could be by getting an education (to become a lawyer) and then achieving professional success and personal happiness during my lifetime. I wanted to have a loving family, and I wanted to have sufficient wealth so I would never have to worry about money—because my mother and I financially struggled after my father’s death. The applied knowledge in this book allowed me to overcome my rocky beginnings, accomplish my goals and dreams, and achieve wealth and success.

If you invest the time to read this book, you shall find the knowledge and know-how necessary to achieve your wealth and success. All you must do is apply it because applied knowledge is the Power of Creation.

Since today my family and I spend most of our time in the Mediterranean region of Europe, I have assigned the responsibility of publishing this book to Daniel Siberio, CPA, who is our family office financial advisor in the United States. He shall be the legal and financial representative for getting the book issued to the public and promoting the book to young adults who are interested in achieving wealth and success. The net proceeds from book sales shall be used to develop the Seven Principles of Life educational course, with the goal of having these lessons taught to all high school and college students. If young people start out with this knowledge, they stand a better chance of achieving their goals in life, whatever those might be. They will be better equipped for success, so that they, too, can realize their dreams. May all who invest the time to read the book benefit from applying the knowledge of the Seven Principles of Life and the VPAT techniques.

In return for the benefits you receive, I only ask that you recommend the book to others who can also benefit from applying the knowledge and that you become a mentor to at least one person during your lifetime. If you help others, then the law of reciprocity shall reward you accordingly and the world will be a better place for all to enjoy.

May your life journey be filled with health, happiness, and prosperity (H²P)—the foundational concept that we’ll get into below. I’m delighted that you’ve joined me to discover the way.

Introduction—Why Should I Read This Book?

If you’re seventeen to twenty-five years old, you should ask yourself, What is my life going to be like over the next forty to forty-five years?

When I was seventeen years old and a senior in high school, I was fortunate enough to have a wise uncle named Harry tell me, Time stops for no one until you die. Uncle Harry said to me that a lot of people in the world lived their lives without any specific purpose or goals to focus their thoughts and energy to achieve success in life and that these people would end up living forty, fifty, sixty, or more years in lives full of frustration, hate, unhealthiness, unhappiness, and poverty. He said that most of these people were ignorant, not stupid, but simply unaware of the Seven Principles of Life and the VPAT techniques (visualization, planning, action, and tracking) that are the basis to the Power of Creation.

The year was 1975, and here I was at seventeen having a conversation with my uncle about the Power of Creation.

I thought, What is he talking about? But out of respect, I asked my uncle, What does all this have to do with me?

He said, You’re seventeen, and I’m fifty-seven, and when I was about your age, my father had a similar conversation with me that changed my life for the better.

I later found out from my Aunt Rose that Grandpa John (who I didn’t know because he passed away when I was two years old) was an attorney and a really smart guy, and that he spent his life studying the mystic arts. He had studied the ways of Freemasons, Rosicrucians, Buddhists, Hindus, yogis, and the early 1900s’ New Thought movement that was promoted by people such as Napoleon Hill, Wallace Wattles, and William Walker Atkinson.

John was an extraordinary person who was born into poverty in 1870 or thereabouts. No one really knew his date of birth since he had been abandoned by his unwed mother at a Catholic orphanage when he had been a toddler. He’d managed to survive the orphanage (which he described as a living hell) and educate himself to become a successful lawyer, entrepreneur, and real estate investor. He lived to be about ninety years old (dying in 1960) and managed to raise three kids practically on his own because his first and only wife (my grandmother Mary Rose) died during the 1919 Spanish Flu pandemic, which was exactly one year after giving birth to Harry.

My grandparents had three kids—my Aunt Rose (the oldest), my father, William (the middle child), and then Harold (the youngest, whom everyone called Harry)—and each was born about three years apart, which allowed them to develop close sibling relationships during their journeys through life.

According to my Aunt Rose, Grandpa John’s biggest successes were his family and his contributions to making the community and the world a better place. His generous contributions were many. For example, after his wife died, he didn’t give up on his children. During the Great Depression, he helped set up a shelter for the homeless in New York City. After WWII, he sold a lot of land that was used to create suburban housing for returning GIs. He helped orphan children get an education. He didn’t do great things, but he consistently did little things throughout his life to help people less fortunate. Grandpa must have been with Harry in spirit that day as Harry taught me about the principles of life and the Power of Creation.

As Harry told me the story, it turns out that Grandpa John explained to young Harry how he overcame extreme poverty, personal hardship (the unexpected death of my grandma), and other obstacles like surviving life in an orphanage. He did more than survive—he was able to succeed in life by learning a series of principles (Universal Laws, he called them) that allowed him to focus his thoughts and energies to first dream and visualize, then plan, and take action to finally create the life he wanted to live. He told Uncle Harry that life on earth was a journey with a starting point called birth and a final destination called death, and that time was the element in between both. He said it’s what you do with your time that counts and that time is the journey through life. Grandpa then said to Harry that the first and probably the most important place to start the journey was self-realization.

I immediately wondered what self-realization could be, and so I asked him. He explained that self-realization was simply my ability to know myself. And he then asked me, Do you know yourself? What are your values? What are your beliefs? What are your habits? What makes you truly happy? What are your dreams? What are your goals? What is your purpose in life?

He then said, You must know thyself to awaken your self-realization. He told me that the philosopher Aristotle believed that knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. He also revealed that many religions believed that if you know yourself, you shall know mankind, the universe, and God.

At this point, he said, Self-realization is your level of consciousness about who you are and what you believe and value at any given time, and your self-realization awareness will evolve during your lifetime through education and life experiences. But at this point in our conversation, my uncle could tell from my blank facial expression that I had no clue what he was talking about. I was wondering how all this information would benefit me now or in the future.

Harry then said, "Look, Benjamin, let me say this another way so you can understand. You need to know what you want in life because that is probably what you’re going to get. Most people have no idea who they really are and what they want or need in life to be healthy, happy, and prosperous for themselves, their families, and their communities. This fact is why today and since the beginning of modern society in democratic countries around the world and especially in the United States, only a small percentage (10 percent or less) of people achieve success in life.

The reality is that most people don’t even know what success in life really means because most people believe that success in life is measured by money. And although money is a partial measure of success, it isn’t the complete measure of success because there are a lot of miserable people who have a lot of money but are unhealthy mentally, physically, or spiritually and not truly prosperous. They don’t flourish or achieve happiness simply by the acquisition of wealth. Even worse are those people, such as criminals, who have a lot of money because they have sold their souls for it.

He then said something that I have never forgotten:

Benjamin, the true measure of success in life is how well your time was spent.

Yes, time well spent is the true measure of success because it’s all about how you lived your life during your short time on earth. If you’re satisfied with what you
