    Chapter One

Emily was bitterly stabbing at her soggy, dressingless salad in the break room, regretting every life decision that had led her to this point, when one of her co-workers burst into the room, clearly distraught. It appeared that she wasn’t the only one having a bad day.

Darling, I know- her co-worker, who she believed to be named David, though she couldn’t be certain (she rarely talked to anyone other than her husband so learning names wasn’t a big priority on her to-do list). I know-I know you’re upset. But maybe we can-

David was cut off by the person on the other end of the line. Emily couldn’t make out any of the individual words but she could easily pick up on the fact that whoever he was talking to was pissed and that it was a woman. David, noticing Emily sitting at the single table in the shabby break room of the nursing home, turned to face the wall as if that would make him invisible. But it was too late. Emily had already noticed how misty his eyes were and that he would soon be openly weeping if the shouting continued.

Yes dear, David said, sounding like a man at the end of his rope, the doctor said that there’s nothing we-I mean I can do.

There was more inaudible shouting on the other end.

We’ve already gone to five doctors, dear. David added in the ‘dear’ a bit too late, trying his best to calm down his wife (girlfriend?) on the other end of the call. I think-I think we should consider-

David was cut off once more. His eyes locked with Emily’s for less than a second before they each darted away, pretending that they hadn’t noticed the other. Emily just kept looking at her sorry excuse for a meal and did her best to pretend that she wasn’t aware that David was there and that he was clearly in the middle of a lover’s quarrel.

Dear, please, David pleaded with the person on the phone, don’t-dont...we can still...can’t we talk this out? I’m sure we can...

Once more, the room was silent except for the staticky shouting coming from David’s phone.

If-if that’s what you want. David gulped. I-I can do that...I’m sorry...

Somehow, his apology made the shouting worse. Emily knew she shouldn’t, but she couldn’t help but be curious about what the argument was about. Whatever it was that David did or didn’t do, he looked truly sorry. Maybe it was just her previous job as a housekeeper that made her inclined to know all the gossip, but she really wanted to know what the woman on the other end was saying.

Of course, she wouldn’t ask about it. That was David’s business and his alone.

Al-alright. David said nervously into the phone. If-if that’s what you want...ok, talk to you later. I-I love you.

The shouting stopped and for a moment Emily thought the woman on the other end had calmed down.

Beth? David called into the phone.
