Chapter 1
The ferry left that night on schedule. Not a single person from London was on board.
In a flash, a plan that had taken two separate agencies and over three dozen field operatives to create was put on hold. A message was sent to the safe-house in Glasgow to stand by. A smoking barbeque was extinguished as the gang set down their luggage and headed back inside.
All it took was a few not-so-simple words.
He’s Jennifer Jones’ little brother.
That’s impossible,
Gabriel said flatly. Jen didn’t have a brother.
When the makeshift Kerrigan family had gathered in the living room, an unintentional line had sprung up between them. One that left everyone clustered together by the sofas, with just two people on the other side. Two people that bore a striking resemblance to a pair of rogue assassins who’d been brought into the fold. Relatively recently, as their friends were suddenly forced to admit.
She might have,
Devon ventured tentatively. For whatever reason, he was still holding the tongs he’d been using to barbeque the meat. They vibrated nervously in his hand. You only saw her on missions and at the church. There’s no telling what kind of—
The tongs melted into a puddle on the floor.
This is ridiculous,
Angel hissed, her pointed combat boots angled towards the door. You’re trying to say that—
I-I’m not trying to say anything,
Aria stammered, wedged firmly in between both her parents. The crumpled photograph sitting tentatively in her hand. Only that—
You cannot fictionalize a family,
Gabriel interrupted, abruptly running his hands through his hair, as if the matter was settled. "I don’t know who this man is, but he’s certainly not—"
The picture levitated in front of him, hovering in the air.
It was one of those moments that lent new credence to a phrase Aria had been hearing all her life: frozen in shock. Because in that moment, her uncle went so still there was no longer anything remotely lifelike about his face. That being said, there might have been some larger force at play.
No sooner had they registered the image than the entire room shifted slightly out of balance. When Aria blinked back into equilibrium, the photograph was suddenly in Angel’s hand.
That’s not possible,
she whispered hoarsely, looking as though she was staring into an open grave. Gabriel, it isn’t...
In a heartbreaking moment of uncertainty, Angel offered the picture to her older brother for validation. A single look at his face said it all. The freeze had unlocked and one hand rose to his mouth, holding back all those screaming denials he suddenly couldn’t bring himself to say.
But she never told me,
he breathed, taking it from Angel’s hand. All those years...she never said a word about having another family. I always thought...
His fingers tightened almost lovingly around the edges, and Aria realized all at once the tragic significance. This beautiful, haughty-looking girl must have raised him.
The infamous assassin who’d betrayed her grandmother and tried to murder her mother. Who’d fallen in love with a psychopath and spent her entire adult life taking orders from a madman in the depths of a cave...must have been one of the only people in the world to show him love.
Before all his new friends killed her.
At that point, Julian and Natasha shared a nervous look—inching closer to their respective spouses. Devon’s eyes flashed to the window, where Carter was speaking to a group of agents on the sidewalk. Luke and Molly kept their gaze carefully fixed on the floor.
Rae was staring intently at Gabriel, those blue eyes peering into his very soul.
Take a walk with me.
Her soft words fell unnoticed between them, as Gabriel dropped the photograph and started pacing. But the damage had already been done. And no matter which direction he angled, no matter where he happened to be looking, those two unsmiling faces were burned into his mind.
"That’s who’s been doing this, he said under his breath, eyes flashing at the mere thought of it. The others might as well have vanished; there wasn’t room for both sets of people to exist at the same time.
All this time, it was Jen’s own brother who—"
He caught himself with a violent expression, finishing the sentence in his head.
—shot Jason in the leg.
Gabriel,
Rae tried again, stepping towards him, take a walk with me.
Angel was going through a similar transformation, trapped halfway in the past as the terrible events of the last few weeks ripped fresh trails through her mind. Julian tried his best to intervene, taking his place beside her and reaching almost imperceptibly for her pale and trembling hands.
Honey—
But his wife was looking past him. Her eyes were on the door.
Jen’s little brother put my daughter in a prison under the ground,
she murmured to herself, trying out different variations of the words, as if to make sense of them. Jennifer’s brother kidnapped Lily.
The children exchanged a bracing look and tightened their formation—inching towards the edges of the room. They might not have understood quite what was happening, but they knew on instinct that they wanted no part. This particular die had been cast years before they were born.
Only Aria stayed where she was, rooted in horror at her father’s side.
Where did you get that picture?
Devon asked softly, flexing his fingers in the sleeves of his coat. Unnoticed by the others, stinging metallic burns laced up the sides. Arie, answer me—
She startled out of her trance, half-wishing she’d kept it to herself.
I found it in Dorian’s house near Bristol. It was wedged in a book.
She cast a fearful look at her aunt and uncle, both of whom were shedding those layers of humanity and better resembled feral animals trapped in a cage. After everything that happened, I forgot about it until now. But it was just delivered back to me with evidence recovery. There was a box in my room—
Evidence recovery,
Angel interrupted in that same low voice. "From the abduction. After Jennifer’s brother blew up the car..."
Perhaps their childhood protector had an exclusive claim on forgiveness, despite her countless sins. Perhaps they had simply buried her part of the story, and couldn’t bear the memory to be tarnished with a direct attack on their own kin. But it had activated a dangerous part of them.
A part their newfound family had watched them try for many painful years to repress.
Gabriel.
Rae stepped right in front of him, stopping that manic pacing in its tracks. Given the look on his face, it seemed the best way to get ripped into pieces. But she stared up without a hint of fear.
Her daughter was less convinced.
Mom,
she ventured quietly, maybe this isn’t the best time to—
—had no right,
Gabriel was muttering under his breath, working his way into a frenzy. "A blood-relative, but he would dare to attack my son. Those green eyes flashed with the promise of a thousand acts of vengeance that would haunt the others’ dreams.
As if Jen would have ever allowed such a thing. As if she would have—"
Two slender hands appeared on the sides of his face.
Gabriel.
Rae!
He jerked himself free, glaring down with an expression that sent chills up Aria’s spine. For a second, the two just stared at each other. Then he cocked his head to the door. ...take a walk with me.
Rae opened her mouth, then closed it with the hint of a smile. That’s a great idea.
The two were gone a second later—off to cool a devil’s temper and abate several magnitudes of seismic retribution in the cul-de-sacs of London. Aria stared after them with wide eyes, but the others were so used to such things that the instant the door closed they moved on to other problems.
Why don’t we start at the beginning?
In a surprising turn of events, it was Luke who approached Angel— gently easing her free of Julian’s grip and steering her towards a small table beside the window.
Molly sat down across from them.
Then we can start making plans.
The frightening assassin regarded them a moment then sank abruptly into a chair, speaking in a low murmur that was lost to the rest of them. Carter’s business with the agents on the curb had concluded and he was heading back inside. The photograph that had caused so much trouble was still lying in the middle of the floor, those two forgotten faces staring up at the rest of them.
Aria glanced around the room, then stuffed it back into her pocket.
Why don’t you children go upstairs,
Devon suggested softly, keeping an eye out the window on his wife’s head of raven hair. Give everyone a little time to cool off.
No sooner had he made the suggestion than six pairs of feet were thundering up to the second story, leaving the scene behind as they locked themselves inside Aria’s room. They may have been through hell, and the government considered most of them adults, but this... this was where they were still children and completely fine with that.
CONSIDERING HOW MANY times the friends had holed themselves away before, it was meant to be an unspoken comfort. But that initial contact had the opposite effect. Not only were they thrown by the pile of moving boxes stacked by the door, but the second they stepped inside they were accosted by the contents of Dorian’s bunker strewn across the bedroom floor.
Crinkled candy wrappers, bloody jackets, a pair of grass-stained shoes. The entire thing hung heavy with the scent of musty earth, and for a split second it was like being back below ground.
James took a cursory glance around, then threw his sister a look. You should really clean this room.
A spattering of laughter eased the tension as the six of them slipped inside, nudging a path through the wreckage and perching atop the bed all together. The result was a bit too crowded to be comfortable. It reminded Aria of a bunch of nervous birds, huddled atop the same rock.
For a full minute, no one dared to say anything. Then Sofia broke the silence.
I don’t understand what just happened,
she said tentatively. I mean, I know who Jennifer Jones was and why that’s important. But I don’t know why Gabriel and Angel are so angry.
Angry was understating it. Entire maps had been rewritten when those two people got angry.
It’s just a betrayal,
Lily answered quietly. A betrayal to Jennifer’s memory. Remember that Gabriel didn’t even help to kill her. When the others went to do it, he stayed behind.
The shifter shook her head, holding tight to Benji’s hand.
"But she did so many terrible things. Things that affected them. Didn’t she fall in love with Simon—who basically tortured Gabriel as a kid? Didn’t she try to kill your mom?"
Aria resisted the urge to shrug. That was an ever-growing list. If they condemned everyone who was on it, Gabriel and Angel wouldn’t be downstairs themselves.
Probably the rest of them as well...
So what?
Sofia looked at the rest of them, unable to understand the passivity. "They just decided to look past it? The woman worked for Cromfield."
So did they,
Jason inserted quietly.
And your parents fought for him.
But all the rest of it?
Sofia insisted. They just forgave her?
I don’t think they forgave her, exactly,
Benji offered hesitantly. "I think they just...put the matter to rest. The fact is that Jen only ever cared for them, protected them. The people she went after were peripheral, relatively speaking. That her own brother would be the
