    Psalms

Central to the Lives of God’s People

In the psalms, we find words that express the deepest longings of our hearts: the aching of our souls when we experience loss, the exuberant joy of knowing ourselves forgiven, and the deep gratitude of God’s amazing grace. God’s people have sung, recited, memorized, and shared the psalms for thousands of years. The psalms are central in the lives of God’s people.

The psalms are songs of praise, thanksgiving, lament, wisdom, blessing, and more. They provide us with models for our own spiritual lives. When pain has robbed us of words and meaning, the psalms provide us with words to scream to God for help and solace. When joy has filled our hearts so thoroughly, the psalms help us express our gratitude and our praise to God who is the fountain of all goodness.

However, the psalms do not give us step-by-step instructions for how to pray and give praise to God. Instead, the psalms show us how to praise and pray. As the fourth-century theologian Athanasius famously wrote, "Most of Scripture speaks to us; the Psalms speak for us."

The book of Psalms is for all of God’s people. Although the psalms are important for our individual spiritual lives, they are the songs and prayers of a community, God’s community. If we are to engage in the life of the kingdom of God, we must learn the language, the character, and the values of the kingdom of God.

The psalms are filled with teachings about God: who God is and how
