Healing Miracles in Acts of the Apostles - Paul Feider
Introduction
Many have studied the miracles in the gospels and discovered the power of Jesus’ love to change lives and draw people into a saving faith relationship with him. He was filled with the perfect love of the Father. He carried that love to every person he encountered. This perfect love, which is called agape in the New Testament, brought about physical, emotional and spiritual healing as well as dispelled evil. He taught his disciples that they could receive that love from the Father and be empowered to heal others.
In this book we will explore 18 of the healing and transforming miracles in Acts of the Apostles. We will read how the love of the Father that overflowed in Jesus was poured out on the disciples after the resurrection which empowered them to experience healing and to minister healing to others. Acts of the Apostles demonstrates that people like us can receive this love, this Holy Spirit, and do the things that Jesus did. As followers of Jesus we are commissioned to continue manifesting this healing energy by living in the presence of the Father’s love.
As we step into the Acts of the Apostles, we will discover what was at the heart of the early Christian communities. We can uncover what gave these first Christians the power to heal, emboldened them to stay with Jesus’ message in the face of persecution and empowered them to overcome differences and live as a community. These first disciples were not just trying to get to heaven, although we can believe that they did; they were actively bringing heaven to earth. They were proclaiming the risen presence of Jesus in word and action. They formed the first healing communities and their story offers us a challenging and yet compelling picture of how to live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
In these accounts, we see how people like us changed the world in which they lived and did it as a normal part of their commitment to Jesus. These were ordinary people doing extraordinary things because they submitted to the extraordinary power of the Holy Spirit. These stories were written not just to tell us about Jesus and his followers but to change us to become like him and those we call disciples. We can hardly read Acts of the Apostles and not wonder what it was like to walk in the sandals of those early believers and to see the demonstrations of power manifested by those anointed with the full energy of the Holy Spirit. We invite that anointing to fill us as we make this journey into these stories.
Background to Acts of the Apostles
Acts of the Apostles was written by Luke, who also wrote the Gospel of Luke. He seems to have known the Apostles, Mary, Paul, and many of the early disciples. Toward the end of Acts, we read evidence that Luke traveled with Paul and witnessed the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit. His Gospel and Acts preserve for us a complete account of the life of Jesus and the early church community. He portrays a great awareness of the miracles of Jesus and the Holy Spirit’s presence after the resurrection, which empowered the early disciples to do the type of miracles that Jesus did. In his book, The Gospel of the Holy Spirit, Alfred McBride writes, Scarcely a paragraph or page goes by without a reference to the dynamic presence of the Spirit in the lives of the people who carry Jesus to the world. Every new development, every distinct growth is linked with its divine origin.
Acts of the Apostles gives us an inspiring picture of those early disciples. They preached, built community, healed, spoke in tongues, discerned, loved, taught, and died for their belief, and all of this was not seen as unusual but quite normal.
This journey into Acts will allow us to witness the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of people like us. That same power is available to us today! This book tells us how to access that power, that anointing, so that we might bring healing and the fullness of life to those we meet.
Purpose of This Book
The purpose of this book is to introduce us to the full anointing of the Holy Spirit as it existed in the early Christian community. It is meant to encourage, yes, even compel us to accept fully the gift of the Holy Spirit so that we might be changed as well as change those around us.
