Introduction
Sleep is the time when our bodies recharge and cell damage is repaired. While we indulge in this much-needed rest, we are physically and mentally rejuvenated, allowing us to begin life anew upon waking; at least that’s what is supposed to happen.
For many people, sleep is something to avoid for as long as possible. For these unfortunate souls, the dream world is not a place of peace and renewal, but rather an arena where demons—real or imagined—take pleasure in driving them to the brink of madness.
After coming to the realization that two terrifying episodes in my life were probably instances of sleep paralysis rather than encounters with the paranormal (although I’m still not convinced that the two are mutually exclusive) I decided to explore bizarre sleep phenomena more closely.
It should be noted that sleep paralysis is something we all experience on a nightly basis. This built-in protective mechanism is our body’s way of keeping us from leaping out of our beds and acting out our dreams. The accounts featured here deal with those extreme cases in which the safeguards become more harmful than the actions they are intended to prevent.
This is not a reference book or scientific study. It is simply a collection of disturbing tales relating the experiences of everyday people whose lives have been turned upside down by various sleep disorders. While some of these encounters appear to be straightforward examples of sleep paralysis gone awry, others lean sharply towards the paranormal.
Included in these pages are stories of shadowy figures that show up uninvited in the twilight hours; sleepwalking; demonic visitations; astral projection; and much more. There are also chapters devoted to the meanings behind common dreams and the practice of contacting spirits while we slumber.
Prepare yourself for a chilling look into what some people are forced to endure when sleep creeps up on them. You will find that their dreams are anything but peaceful as they wrestle with the entities that prey upon them when darkness falls. Welcome to their nightmares.
Chapter 1:
The Night Terror
In 2004, nineteen-year-old Lisa Martin was the victim of a nocturnal attack that is shrouded in mystery to this day. The surreal encounter would probably have been written off as an incredibly realistic nightmare had it not been for the fact that it was an experience she did not suffer alone.
It all started when Lisa, her parents and two brothers, Brian age twelve and Isaac who had just turned fifteen, were invited to attend a family wedding that was being held in a neighboring state. Rather than paying for a hotel room, they opted to save the money and sleepover at the home of one of their relatives.
The boys bunked with a male cousin while Lisa was relegated to the living room where she would spend two nights on the couch. Though not ideal, it was better than nothing. As the first evening of their stay drew to a close, she waited patiently for those who were gathered in her sleeping quarters to retreat to their own rooms so that she could turn in for the night.
When she finally had the place to herself, she settled in and was asleep before she knew it. Not long after dozing off, she was awakened by the sensation of something resting heavily on her midriff. Since the place was overflowing with out-of-towners and their young offspring, her initial thought was that someone was playing a prank on her. It was only when she attempted to push the figure off of her that she made the horrifying discovery that there was no one there, at least not that she could see.
As she lay there trying to process what was happening, the weight further compressed her airway, making it harder and harder to breathe. Cognizant that she was being suffocated, Lisa tried to sit up. It was in that moment that she realized that, not only was she wide awake, but also that she was powerless in the face of whatever was holding her down.
She soon discovered that the more she struggled, the less air she was able to take in. She found herself losing control of her body with each passing moment. No longer able to move her arms, which lay useless at her sides, she tried to kick at the unseen presence, but her legs failed her as well.
Although she couldn’t move her limbs or utter a sound, she found that she could turn her head from side-to-side. As she scanned the room for anything that might lead to her salvation, she noticed that the time on the DVD player read 2:30 on the dot. She recalls staring at the numbers, which never changed, as her consciousness slowly slipped away.
As the dim light in the room began to fade, Lisa says that the oppressive weight suddenly lifted, allowing her to take in a lungful of precious air. Within seconds, she was breathing normally and had regained the use of her arms and legs.
After going to the kitchen and helping herself to a soda, she returned to the living room and collapsed onto an armchair. No longer having any interest in sleep, she spent the remainder of the night watching television while everyone else in the house enjoyed their slumbers, blissfully unaware of her ordeal. That is, as far as she knew.
The next morning, as members of both her immediate and extended family began filing into the dining room for a buffet-style breakfast, Lisa blurted out everything she could remember about her harrowing ordeal. Not one to suffer in silence, she wanted everyone to know that she had nearly died at the hands of an unseen predator that had waged an attack under cover of darkness.
After listening to the dramatic description of the events that had supposedly occurred in the living area, some of those present were less than sympathetic; snickering and laughing outright at her version of events. One person, however, seemed to be transfixed by her words: her brother Isaac. Although he didn’t say anything at the time, he looked as if he had seen a ghost.
Nowhere near as bold as his older sister, the boy waited until the two of them were alone to share his story. Pulling Lisa aside, he whispered that he had experienced almost exactly the same thing, only, unlike her, he had seen his tormentor in the flesh.
He claimed that at
