The Edge

As the midnight hour approaches across the nation, many are tuning their radios in, to hear their favorite talk show. The air waves begin to fill with a familiar song to many. In the year 2525 plays loudly then begins to fade as the announcers voice interrupts for the introduction.

Welcome to The Edge" the gathering place for the strange, the unusual and all things paranormal. With your late night host Albert Price"

"Hello everybody! This is Al and I want to know, are you on The Edge, over The Edge or at The Edge this evening?! We will have open lines tonight and the topic will be the shadow people. After receiving numerous e-mails on this subject, I thought we might just explore what in Gods name is going on out there! For those of you, who do not know what the shadow people are, you are not alone! It seems as though no one knows, who or what they are! I began receiving e-mails a few months ago on this very subject, and the numbers began to increase. As I have been reporting to you, this phenomenon keeps growing! Within the last week, I was astonished at the number of e-mails I was receiving on a daily basis! Tonight is your chance to discuss this phenomenon, so, if you, or someone you know, has had an experience with these shadow creatures call in and tell me about it. I know there are many of you out there, so, let’s get started. First caller, you are on the air, welcome to The Edge what is your name?"

Hi Al, my name is Jamie and I saw one of those shadow creatures. It happened last month while I was taking out my garbage. There it was, perching on the fence, in kinda a squatting position.

What did it look like, caller?

It was black, like a shadow of a person, ya know, a head, a body with limbs, but, no distinct features of any kind.

Did it do anything? Did it speak or move?

Oh no, it didn’t speak or make any noises it just perched up there on the fence, till I dropped the garbage can and then it jumped up into a tree and was gone.

How high was the tree it jumped into?

Not too high maybe 4 foot from the top of the fence.

Did you feel threatened in any way?

No, it startled me a lot and I headed into the house right away to tell my wife what happened.

What did your wife say about it?

She thought I was nuts until I kept insisting that I really saw the damned thing!

Well thank you for your call, next, we go to Washington, welcome to The Edge".

Hi Al, this is Barb and I saw one of those things driving home from work last night and it scared me to death! It was in the same lane as my car, I had to swerve not to hit it!

It sounds like it shook you up a bit.

You bet it did, I almost wrecked my car, and afterward I was shaking so bad I could hardly drive!

Did you get a good look at it?

Yes it was all dark, a human sort of shape, like a willowy dark mist.

Some say they look transparent, while others say they look more solid, what did this one appear to be?

Well, kinda both, I mean, it was like a dark fog but, you couldn’t really see through it.

Did you get any kind of feelings about it, good or bad?

Well it scared me and it just felt really strange and unnatural, ya know, like, not being real or something.

Ok, thank you for your call. We have time for a couple more calls before I go to the break, we head off to the big city of Chicago, hello, you are on The Edge".

Hey Al, I just tuned in and I would like to know what the hell these shadow people are?

"Well, I am in the same boat as you, as well as many of my listeners, I don’t know, in fact I don’t know of anyone who does know what they are, but, there appear to be sightings of them all over the globe and they are increasing in number and that is why I am having open lines to discuss this matter. Have you seen one?"

No sir, not that I know of, and I hope to hell I never do!

Hello Al, this is Marsha from Ohio and I have seen this shadow thing you are talking about for several years.

How many years dear?

Well, twenty some years. It has never done anything, it is just there and then it is gone. It has been around a long time though. I am not really afraid of it anymore. I am kinda used to it. It is my friendly ghost like Casper

Has anyone else seen it?

Well yes. An ex boyfriend came by one time and he saw it. It scared him so bad I haven’t seen him since!

So, you say that you have been seeing this for over twenty years?

Yes sir, I have. My husband doesn’t see it, but, I do.

"Ok, well there you have it. Over twenty years! What do you think is going on here? Stay tuned as we discuss more of this very strange topic! Very strange indeed! We will be right back to go over The Edge after these messages."

Al stands up out of his chair and stretches his back getting ready for the next radio segment trying to digest the thought of what these things could be. It can’t be everyone’s imagination, not this many people, it is just completely surreal, Al thinks as he takes a long hard drag off his cigarette. The studio is thick with smoke from Al puffing away, a bad habit he tries to kick every couple of years. The smell of stale smoke and strong coffee is a comfortable setting for Al and his work. After all the years in late night talk radio, Al has had striking success despite all the ridicule and jests about his ultra strange topics. With a dash to the restroom and a refill on his coffee he returns to his well worn chair grabs the microphone from above his head and is ready for action.

"Hello folks we are back on the air with more conversations of things that go bump in the night. And sometimes… they don’t even make a sound! Al laughs a haunting yet jesting laugh, as he pushes one of the several buttons lit on his phone board. Caller you are on The Edge

Hey Al, this is Jake and I have an opinion on what these shadows are.

Ok fire away tell us what you think?

"Well I think they are creatures from a different dimension somehow crossing over into our reality. I think it is by accident or some freak phenomenon and they are just as confused about it as we are. From what I have heard, no one has ever been hurt and they have not attempted to actually do anything. Maybe they are just like us and are trying to figure out what is going on."

"You could be right. Who knows? We are all speculating at this point. Thanks for your call. Next caller you are on the air."

Hello is it me?

Well I hope you are you! Al laughs, as he answers the caller.

Oh I am on the air!? Um ok, I am Sherry from Texas.

"Where everything is BIG at the grand old lone star state! Welcome Sherry!"

I haven’t seen one of these shadows, but, the lady up the road from me, has. She told me about it at church this past Sunday. She said she saw something over by her fence that separates her yard from the cattle pasture. She went outside with her dogs and walked over to where the fence was and that is when she saw something. It terrified her Al! It was just like all the people are saying, a strange shadow of a person, very dark and willowy. It was a sunny day and she said she was like a frightened child at night.

Did she say if the shadow did anything?

"She said, it was just standing there for several minutes and then it just vanished! She didn’t know what to make of it, so , she called the pastor of the church to come out and pray with her to help calm her down. She was afraid it was a demon or ghost!

However her dogs were not frightened by this shadow?

No they did not appear to be afraid.

Ok, well thank you for the latest word from Texas.

As it moves closer to the end of the show Al is astounded at the number of stories told about the shadow people. It seems as though there is no end to them. Caller after caller with more information each time. Not one person tried to change the subject even one time!

"Well people we have heard from all over the states tonight and even the Virgin Islands! We are out of time, tune in tomorrow for more strange things to keep YOU on The Edge from the windy city, this is Al, bidding you a safe and peaceful night."

Chapter 2

A Review of Last Night’s Show

Wow last nights show was a knock out Al, the ratings went through the roof!

Bill says excitedly, barely holding the phone to his ear.

Als’ producer, Bill Harrie, didn’t want him to do the show in the first place, since there was no way to predict the ratings with it being a totally new subject.

"Thanks Bill, I told you I had a good feeling on this one, I had so many e-mails on this it truly brought me to believe something is going on, and I think I am right, the phones stayed lit all night."

Al, I want you to do another show on it tonight, this is a HOT topic! Stay with it!

Sure thing Bill, I could probably do a week straight on this, there are a lot of people out there who want to talk about this and to explore what is going on.

Hey, do you think you could find an expert on this for tonight, as a guest?

"Ugh, Bill I don’t think you understand, there ARE no experts, this is a fairly new phenomenon. Which is why it is so controversial right now, no one knows what it is."

Oh I see, ok then, you just do your job and we will talk later.

Al hangs up the phone with a little grin poking through his full mustached lips. Al knows Bill tries to fit in with the shows paranormal topics, but, never quite gets it. Al begins to rearrange tonight’s scheduled guest to another time slot to allow for another go around with open lines about the shadow people. He is a pro at this after 15 years of having his own talk show on the strange and unusual, his gut tells him what to go with and what to stay away from. This time will prove no different.

Al hurries around his living room thinking, he only has a little over an hour left before he has to go on air. It usually takes the better part of 45 minutes of drive time to get to the studio. I better eat now or I will end up trying to down a sandwich at the break, he thinks to himself. Al had spent the whole evening reading e-mails on the shadow people and time had really gotten away from him. No shower today. Thank God I am alone in the studio! Looking through the fridge, he finds a leftover piece of meat loaf and begins to munch on it, as he scans for more hidden goodies, he spots a bowl of tuna salad, he grabs it out and reaches for the loaf of rye bread on the counter. He quickly makes a sandwich and heads off for the studio. Another night of shadow people, this has become one of my favorite subjects, he thinks with anticipation.

More and more testimonials of shadow people flood in throughout the night. It seems as though it was a replay of last night show. The shows of the shadow people are beginning to meld together, with same reports just different people in different places. As he signs off the air he is tired and exhilarated hearing all the stories about what people think and feel about these shadows. Still, nothing is clear about what they are! Al is now convinced it is not the imagination of the good folks, as some would think. He is often protective of his listeners and will go to bat with anyone to defend them. He knows after his own UFO experience with his ex wife a good many years ago, that there is no one that can tell him it didn’t happen. After the sighting of the UFO, it motivated him into a new direction with his radio life, of having a radio show about the strange and unusual. A place where people could feel at ease sharing stories of the strange without feeling humiliated or ashamed of their experiences. Al has taken so much crap from multitudes of radio and media people who thought he was crazy to have a show on the paranormal. They all tried to talk him out of it, and told him to stick to politics. He was sick of the same old rhetoric even though he was fairly successful at handling the topic. Al was convinced there were a lot of people out there who had experiences of the strange and unusual and they needed a voice! He stuck to his guns, went against the grain of almost everyone he knew. Now he can laugh at all of them, having a number one rated nighttime talk radio show! He has learned to trust his instincts and has a good track record doing so.
