About this ebook

Was Jesus born of a virgin? Why do the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke contradict one another? Is there historical evidence that the first two chapters of Matthew and Luke were added after the original Gospels were written? Why did the early Jewish Christians reject the virgin birth narrative and say that Jesus was born of natural union between a man and a woman? There is a record indicating that Jesus' own relatives described him as the son of Joseph's brother, according to Levirate marriage. Is it reliable? Why did early Christians, like Clement of Alexandria, say that Luke wrote the adoptionist text Jason and Papiscus? Is the prophecy of Isaiah 7:14 accurately applied to Jesus' birth in Matthew 1:23? These issues and more are addressed in this small book, bringing the reader to the undeniable conclusion that Jesus was not born of a virgin.

Jesus Was Not Born of a Virgin - Jason Kerrigan

    1. Contradictory Infancy Narratives

When the details are laid side by side, it is easy to see that the infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke are two different stories.

Instead of trying to rationalize how the first two chapters of Matthew and Luke are saying the same things, let’s look at the evidence and start by asking whether those chapters were even part of the Gospels to begin with. As you will see, the evidence demonstrates they were not.

    2. The Genealogies Pertain to Joseph

To the Jews, it was absolutely necessary that the Messiah be a physical descendant of King David.

God had sworn with an oath to him [David], that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne. (Acts 2:30)

This is why the New Testament authors would constantly affirm that Jesus was a descendant of David according to the flesh.

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh. (Romans 1:3)

Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel. (2 Timothy 2:8)

Thus, we find that the genealogy of Christ is traced back to David in both of the genealogical records found in Matthew and Luke.

Matthew: "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren; ... And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon ... And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ." (Matthew 1:1-2, 6,
