The Importance of the High Priest

A great truth found in the New Testament is one that speaks about Jesus Christ being our High Priest. Much of what the Bible says about our new High Priest is found in the Book of Hebrews.

The main purpose of the Book of Hebrews is to compare and contrast the workings of the Old Covenant under the supervision of Moses, and the New Covenant under the supervision of Jesus Christ. This particular book goes to great lengths to explain to us the differences between the high priests of the Old Covenant and our High Priest Jesus Christ in the New Covenant. This was necessary because the target audience, of this particular book, was the Hebrews, or we could say the Jewish nation. They understood the significance of the position, or role of the high priest in God’s covenant. The position of the high priest under the Mosaic Law was of great significance because the role of the high priest was to preside over all the workings of the tabernacle and the temple. The high priest was responsible to bring the offerings of the people to God. He was their go to man when it came to communication between them and God. He was their mediator and intercessor with God. This was a very important man within the covenant that God had made with the Hebrews. And it if you spend some time studying the scriptures and the history of the Jewish people, you will find an interesting fact: If their high priest was good, then the well-being of the people was good. Whatever they experienced as a people or nation was resting upon the performance of their high priest. If their high priest was corrupt, then the whole nation of Israel would suffer because of the ill-intent of the high priest. This is why Paul makes it a great point in this book to the Hebrews to deal with this issue of the high priest.

Paul is trying to tell the Jewish nation that the principle of the high priest is still intact, but there is a new system. There is a new covenant, and this new covenant has a new high priest, and His name is Jesus Christ! He is trying to convince them to change their minds, change systems, and receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior, and new High Priest! He is letting them know that Jesus Christ is now the eternal and superior high priest of the Most High God. Paul wants to convince the Hebrew nation that Jesus Christ is the perfect high priest that will never fail them, because there is NO SIN IN HIM. If there is no sin or imperfection in the high priest, the Hebrews understood that their offerings would always be accepted and perfect before God as well.

As concerning this topic of high priests, the Book of Hebrews starts out by telling us something pretty powerful about Jesus as our High Priest in the fourth chapter:

Hebrews 4:14-16(KJV), "¹⁴ Seeing then that we have a great high priest,
