Made In Babylon - John Del Toro

At three o’clock, the final bell rang shrilly and the hallways of Banewood High School came alive with a living current of clamorous teenagers. It was Friday, and a collective sigh of relief was palpable throughout the corridors.

Nikki Miller stashed her books in her locker, she had no homework this weekend, a novelty that her teachers reserved for holidays, even the non-religious ones. Her best friend Claire leaned against the next locker over.

Have you decided on a costume for Ethan’s party yet? she asked Nikki.

Nikki furrowed her brow, feigning concentration.

Well, I can’t decide between bored high student, or invisible high school student," she said.

Invisible, eh? Claire asked, How are you going to pull that one off?"

Easy, Nikki replied, By not going.

"You have to go! Ethan’s Halloween party is almost as big a deal as homecoming! she exclaimed. Plus, his parents always go out of town for the weekend! And while the cats are away, the mice will play!"

You can tell your parents that you are staying at my place after the party, Claire said, That way you can get around the curfew.

It wouldn't be an issue anyway, Nikki said, squinting against the low October sun, They left town this morning. Some aunt of my mother’s is dying, I guess, they went to Missouri to say goodbye.

Well, your great Aunt’s loss is your gain, chirped Claire.

    Tasteless, Nikki replied.

The two walked together down the decorated streets of Banewood. Straw bales and jack-o-lanterns cluttered every porch, scarecrows stood guard over front yards and gauzy fake spiderwebs hung from everything.

Hey, isn't today Gina’s birthday? Claire asked.

    Yeah, replied Nikki.

Well, that sucks for her... your parents going out of town, I mean. I know they always throw her a nice little party.

They threw it together last night, after they got the call about great aunt What’s-Her-Name, Nikki said, "It wasn't fun though, mom was all weepy and
