    Once Upon a Time

    Once upon a time

    I climbed a waterfall

    skidded my bike

    and got a gravel rash

    had scarlatina

    watched my grandpa’s gnarly fingers

    cut up coupons

had to come out of Lassie

and sit sobbing on the stairs

    because it was so sad

wrote a play and half a novel with a school friend

babysat the children of a poet

    taught in a country town

where half the people shared a name

wasted a lot of time in chatter

    but it wasn’t wasted

and wrote a lot of letters

    once upon a time.

    Once upon a time

when I saw a splendid gum tree rearing to the sky

    I’d run to paint it

    capture it on canvas

    make my mark

    for others to enjoy.

Now it’s enough to stand and wonder

    take it in

make it a part of me.

    About Painting

I do stand and wonder, but it seems that just taking it in is not quite enough. I still paint portraits of trees, trying to capture the spirit of the tree, the time and the place, an interpretation more than a photographic portrayal. The painting no doubt says as much about the way I like to see the world as it does about the trees themselves.

The act of painting can be a meditative exercise, taking away consciousness of the rest of the world and focusing attention on the now of the moment and the endeavour, drawing not only on technical knowledge and practice but upon the whole of the painter’s life
