    In a small town there once lived two children, a boy who was fourteen and a girl who was about twelve years old. The boy’s name was Ben, and the girl’s name was Mabulie. Both children came from poor families. The families went to the same church. Ben and Mabulie saw each other every week during the Sunday children’s ministry, and sometimes they also saw each other when they went to fetch water from the town well, but they did not speak at these times.

    One day, Ben saw Mabulie being teased by some other children when he was on his way to the well.

    Your family is poor, the children taunted. You can’t afford water for your house!

    Ben was appalled by the children’s behavior, and he wanted to help Mabulie. He ran to the girl and reached for her bucket. May I carry it for you? he asked.

    Thank you, but no, I can carry it, Mabulie refused.

    That’s fine. But I have to get water too. Shall we walk together? Ben persisted.

    All right, Mabulie agreed. Together, the two children walked to the well and drew their water, then headed home their separate ways.

    On her way home, Mabulie thought about what had just happened. She was astonished. She had seen boys from her church who came to draw water, but no one had ever offered to help her or stood up for her.

    Why did he go out of his way to help me? she wondered. Mabulie thought about it all the way home. She worried that she had done the wrong thing by allowing Ben to walk with her. "Mother told me not to speak to anybody unless it is in church. I can
