It was late afternoon on a beautiful fall day in the old-growth forest of British Columbia. The sun was shining on the trees that covered the mountain slopes above the Pacific Ocean. Owl was sleeping high up in the Grandfather Tree, the biggest, oldest tree in the forest. The day was peaceful, but Owl was dreaming of the exciting adventures she had shared with her friend Brave Jack, the flying squirrel.
But then Owl’s dream changed. She dreamed that a wind was shaking the forest. A voice in her dream said, You must find Brave Jack. There is great danger, and we need his help.
Owl woke up, clinging tightly to her branch, as a strange wind blew around her. This was no dream! The tree was shaking. The voice was real, and it spoke again, Owl, my old friend, you must find Brave Jack and bring him to me.
Owl knew that voice. It was Mother Nature, speaking with the voice of the Grandfather Tree. What? What did you say? I was half asleep,
said Owl.
Oh Owl, you were more than half asleep. But now that you are awake, I need your help. I need you to find Brave Jack and Hamish McChipmunk and bring them here to the Grandfather Tree.
Owl was worried. What is wrong, Mother Nature?
