    Chapter One

    Magic in the Air

The town had been abuzz with talk of the bank robbery for weeks. Mr. Baker had told his story endlessly about how one minute the bank was being robbed then in the next minute the robbers were all bound in this bright fluorescent orange Duck tape.

The bank robbers had muttered something about it being four kids, but everybody just thought they were crazy. Mr. Baker had caught a glimpse of us, but in the end, he’d decided that he must have imagined it. Anyway, the Feds moved in so quickly that the local sheriff was pushed aside. No one ever heard any more about what had actually happened.

The four robbers had been quickly whisked away and the Feds had kept their investigation to themselves. No one in town would ever come to know what really happened. After a while, things died down and our little town just went back to business as usual, as did Jen, Steph, Benji and I.

    Drrrriiiiinnnngg!

The first morning school bell rang, meaning we had five minutes before the first class actually started. Steph and I left the school lobby and had started off down the hall towards our lockers. We passed Mr. Daniels, our school principal, on a step ladder in the hallway. He was messing with one of the clocks.

Hey Mr. Daniels, Steph said as he was starting to climb down the ladder.

Well hello Mrs. Stephanie and Harper. How are you two doing today? Mr. Daniels said with a smile.

Oh we’re good Mr. Daniels, and you? Steph said in her usual polite manner.

I smiled and gave a wave of acknowledgment. Hey, I merely said.

Steph is so irritating with her politeness, ughh. It’s so easy for her. Dang her sometimes.

Mr. Daniels was shaking his head. These clocks in this school are driving me mad. I don’t understand why one or two, and always different ones, seem to be off all the time? They’re killing me!

I chuckled. Steph just bumped into my shoulder. Mr. Daniels tilted his head at us and gave us a puzzled look.

Yeah Mr. Daniels, that seems crazy. Maybe they’re like old or something, Steph said then she gave me a side glance.

Mr. Daniels laughed a little. Actually Stephanie, they’re all new clocks this year, so go figure that one out. Hmm? Maybe I’ll just return them, Mr. Daniels said, now looking at the clock and rubbing his chin, apparently deep in thought.

I motioned to Steph that it was a good time for us to go.

Yeah, okay Mr. Daniels. Um, we’ll see ya later, Steph said as we started to walk away.

Huh? Oh, yeah, you two have a good day, Mr. Daniels replied.

Steph and I got around the corner of the hall then I just cracked up laughing, but quietly so that Mr. Daniels wouldn’t hear me.

Dang Harp, you’re so bad. You know the clock thing is your fault. All your stopping time and moving time around. It’s the timewave, ya know that right? Steph asked, giving me a glare.

I know, I know, but hey, you are part of this thing too pal.  Come on, just remember that we have all been a part of this thing, I said, still chuckling about Mr. Daniels and the clocks.

Mmh, whatever. I guess so, Steph said as she gave me her usual eye roll.

So anyway, history test today Harp. Don’t you dare do you know what, Steph said as some other kids walked up to the lockers around us.

Who me? I wouldn’t do you know what on a history test, I said with a mischievous grin, knowing Steph knew full well I would use my timewave to cheat on my history test if I could.

Harper? Swear, swear on Kiki’s grave. Steph said with a very serious tone.

Dang it, she had to pull out the holiest of all swears.

Oh all right, I won’t, I swear on Kiki’s grave, I said just shaking my head.

Hey Steph, watch this, I said, now changing the subject.

I turned to three of my classmates in the hallway and asked, Hey Justin, you want to see a magic trick?

    Oh Harper, Steph mumbled.

    They all nodded.

All right, who has a dollar bill? I asked the group of kids that had now gathered around me.

Levi pulled out a few wadded up one-dollar bills out of his pocket. Here ya go Harp. I have one.

I took one of the dollar bills and placed it on top of my notebook. I wrote the name Levi across the top of the dollar for everyone to see. I then held the dollar out front and ripped it into several pieces placing them into Levi’s hand.

Geez, Ohh, Dang, Aah! There were several gasps from the crowd that had now gathered to watch my magic trick. Levi made the biggest gasp as his mouth dropped open.

Oh man Harper, you’re going to like pay me back, right? Levi asked.

    I laughed. Just wait.

I glanced over at Steph, she was just shaking her head at me. I paused for a moment, pretending it was for dramatic effect. Everyone was watching me intently. However, I was really only pausing to start my timewave. I was getting pretty good at turning my red wave on and off.

Woosh! The red wave filled the entire hall. Even Steph was frozen in time. I knew that she would lecture me for goofing off with the timewave and I didn’t want to hear it right now. I was sure she would tell me about it later anyway.

I quickly sent time back, motioning my hands just a little so that time didn’t go but a few minutes back, just enough to get the dollar before it was ripped up. I took the dollar and replaced it back into Levi’s hand where the ripped up dollar had been. I now motioned the wave forward. It was so cool, like orchestrating a huge red wall of wavy light. It brought us right back to our original time.

Dang, I’m getting good at this. I do outdo myself sometimes. I chuckled.

    I released the timewave.

Wahlah, I said as I waved my hands and pointed to Levi’s hand that was holding the dollar.

    Holy crap! Levi gasped.

Wow! That was sick! Justin exclaimed.

That was pretty lit! I heard Chloe say from the crowd that had formed.

Oh Harp, how did you do that? Steph asked in a sarcastic tone as she glared at me. Yikes. She was pretty mad. Steph didn’t like it when the timewave was used for goofing off. She especially didn’t like it when she was left frozen within the red waves.

Ah, it’s magic, I said to the group that had formed around me to watch.

    Drrrriiiiinnnngg!

    Cool, saved by the bell.

Come on guys, we have to get to class, I said as I laughed.

Ah man, Ah, come on, I heard from the now dissipating crowd.

As we grabbed our history books and shut our locker doors, Steph turned to me and said, Man Harp, you’re just too much sometimes.

I grinned and shrugged. Steph gave me a good shove as we walked down the hall towards history class.

Mr. Cooper didn’t waste any time passing out the morning’s test. It was our first quarterly test. I was pretty excited because I’d actually studied for it, and wasn’t planning on cheating, like Steph was suspecting.

I looked over at Steph. She was glaring at me. I then looked at Jen, who was sitting behind Steph, she was just shaking her head at us and quietly laughing.

    What? I mouthed to Steph.

Don’t you do it, Steph mouthed back.

I am not going to, I whispered, but then I gave her an ornery smile just to torment her.

Quiet! Mr. Cooper said as he gazed at Steph and me.

Steph looked at me and rolled her eyes. A little chuckle slipped out then I realized Mr. Cooper was giving me the evil eye, so I focused back on the test that was now sitting in front of me.

Gosh darn it, I’m not going to use my timewave for help this time. I will show Steph. I can do this on my own!

I struggled a little with the test, but managed to muddle my way through and didn’t even have to cheat. When history class ended and the bell rang, I made sure to point to the clock. I wanted Steph and Jen both to see that the clock was still on time with the school’s bell.

See, I didn’t use the wave, I said to my friends as we walked down the hall towards our lockers.

Steph laughed. Yeah, I suppose not, but we’ll see what kind of grade you get.

    Jen just laughed at me.

I gave her a little shove.

Oh yeah, like an A, I said as I gave them both a smart-alecky look.

Oh Harp, whatever, Steph said as she laughed, Anyway, let’s see if you can make it through the rest of the day without using your wave.

Ha, now why would I want to do that? I asked, That would be a bore, wouldn’t it?

Geez, you two are killing me already today, Jen said as she gave us an eye roll and then a big sigh.

    Drrrriiiiinnnngg!

Come on guys, we’re going to be late for math class, Steph said, now rushing to get her math book out of her locker.

We rounded the end of the second hall and cleared the classroom door just in time for the final bell to ring.

    Drrrriiiiinnnngg!

Geez, I told you! That was close, Steph said with an irritated tone.

I just laughed at her and whispered, Well, I could have used the timewave. We would have had plenty of time then.

Shut up, Steph said, shaking her head at me.

Jen just gave me a little shove into my seat.

Just like history class, the three of us all sat by each other in math class also. Benji wasn’t in this class. He was in art class during this period.

Mrs. Whitby was our math teacher. She was a hoot. She was a petite little woman, but she was a feisty thing. We knew not to mess with her when she got mad, but luckily that wasn’t very often. The good thing about Mrs. Whitby was that she made math fun. I’d also thought that she made it seem easy, at least for me.

Hey Harper, Levi hollered from a couple of desks over.

Hey what? I replied, turning my attention to Levi.

Hey, how about showing us another magic trick? Levi asked.

Yeah Harp, do another one, Chloe chimed in.

I looked to the front of the room. Mrs. Whitby wasn’t at her desk yet.  I glanced out the classroom door window. Mrs. Whitby was talking with Mr. Daniels in the hallway, so I figured we had a little bit of extra time. Mrs. Whitby was known to gab a lot with the other teachers. Actually, she was quite a story teller.

Okay, okay. Just let me think for a minute, I answered.

Steph just moaned and rolled her eyes at me.

I chuckled. All right, yeah, okay, I have one, I said just as the door opened and Mrs. Whitby walked in.

Have one what, Harper? Mrs. Whitby asked as she closed the classroom door and walked to her desk.

Dang teachers, they always catch me at the wrong time.

Harper does awesome magic tricks Mrs. Whitby, Levi said.

Oh really? Is that a fact? Mrs. Whitby asked as she looked at me with a raised eyebrow.

I shrugged and didn’t say anything.

Yeah, Mrs. Whitby, you should see one, Chloe added.

Oh man, these guys aren’t helping.

Mrs. Whitby laughed. Okay class, who would like to put math aside for a moment and see Harper perform a magic trick? That is if Harper wants to.

Of course, the entire class raised their hands, that was everyone except for Steph.

Mrs. Whitby laughed again. Okay then, Harper, would you like to entertain us with some magic?

    I nodded and said, Sure.

I glanced over at Steph, she was shaking her head. I just mischievously smiled at her.

Hmm, okay Mrs. Whitby, I want you to think of a number from one to a hundred, and don’t tell me, I said. Then I laughed after thinking about that and Mrs.
