Until the SS commander approaches the platoon lieutenant with an offer that could only come from a dedicated Nazi. A threat to commit a heinous war crime if the Americans continue their attack.

Ray Cassidy and his buddy Harry Byrd have other ideas, and they hatch a plan to turn things around. To put their plan into effect, they have to carry out a hair-raising dash across the rooftops of Thier-du-Mont. Success will mean the saving of many innocent lives. Failure will mean their deaths. They’d finally left the dark, claustrophobic gloom of the Ardennes after long and bitter fighting. There’d been no Christmas vacation for the 82nd. The Germans had defended every square foot of the dense forest, carpeted with a thick fall of snow that made for hard going. 1st Platoon had taken so many casualties their fighting strength was down to nine men until Lieutenant Bond announced replacements were due in that morning. Men cheered, but one grunted, More meat for the grinder.

It was still cold. Bitter cold, but PFC Ray Cassidy was at home in the outdoors. Back home he spent every spare moment in the mountains. Short and wiry, he was a skilled hunter, a natural. Frequently he’d track an animal for hours before he lined up the perfect shot. But here, he tracked and pursued different game. Ignoring the bitter wind that howled down from the forest they’d left behind, and here, the weather was colder than he could remember from back home.
