Chapter One
On Tuesday morning, I followed my routine and showed up at work just before opening time and spent the day fixing engines, replacing tires and running diagnostics. Once again I knocked out more jobs than anyone else, which thrilled my boss, Charlie.
Damn, Liam.
he said as we clocked out. You must be gunning for a bonus, you know it’s a ninety day wait on those payouts, right?
Charlie was referring to the ‘Quality Service’ bonuses that the dealership paid out if we worked extra jobs. The company tracked how many repair and service jobs each mechanic did and how long they were expected to take. If you did them faster or did more jobs than projected, you got a bonus. The drawback was the wait time. In order to prevent mechanics from just rushing through jobs to get the bonus, the work had to hold up. If a customer came back for more repair work on the vehicle within three months and it was attributed to poor repairs the previous time, the jobs points went from a positive to a negative toward the bonus. In addition, the bonuses tended to be small unless you earned a lot of points, so combined with the delay, it meant most guys did the jobs they were assigned and didn’t go looking for extra work.
Seriously,
he said as we left for the day, You did ten repairs in the time most others did five or six.
Just doing the job, man.
I told him.
So long as you do it right.
Charlie cautioned me. The only thing the general manager hates more than lazy workers are sloppy ones. I trust ya, but I really hope we don’t see these cars coming back next week.
They won’t.
I promised him. I did the work right, you’ll see.
Charlie gave me a thumbs up as I pulled out of the car lot. His warning made me think maybe I should sandbag a little to get down to the ‘above average’ level of expectations instead of cranking out the ‘exceptional’ level of work I had put in over the past two days.
My problem was that it was so easy now, when I looked at an engine problem my brain found the solution and my hands did the work. No hunting for clues, no need to look things up constantly. Every repair and maintenance manual I had ever read was accessible to me now. One of the unintended side effects of my first wish, the one that gave me total control over every cell in my body, was that I now had perfect recall.
I drove my classic red VW Beetle home and parked it in the driveway on my side of the duplex before collecting my mail and going inside.
I gave the place a quick once over to ensure that Jazz’s bottle and Barry’s urn were where I had left them. I in’t think anyone was going to break in and take them, but then I hadn’t expected Barry to steal Jazz’s receptacle either. Thanks to his stupidity and the wording of his first wish combined with the specifics of mine, I had managed to get her back, make him into a genie and recover Grampy Gene’s wallet in the process. Of course, now I was dealing with the fallout of those actions.
When my great grandfather had passed away, I had inherited Jazz’s bottle and Barry had gotten Grampy Gene’s magic wallet. The wallet would always have whatever amount of money you needed in it. The problem was the wallet didn’t see the difference between ‘need’ and ‘want’, it just read your mind or something and teleported the currency into itself. Barry had abused the hell out of the wallet, not realizing it was taking the money from somewhere, and now someone calling himself ‘Platinum Jack’ was hunting for Barry.
Since Barry was currently trapped in the miniature urn that held a portion of my great grandfather’s ashes, Jack was going to have a hard time tracking him down.
Tossing the mail on my kitchen table, I went into the living room and removed the blue glass stopper from Jazzeramine’s bottle.
A second later, a cloud of blue smoke billowed out of the neck and swirled around to become the beautiful genie who now served me. She was dressed in her default blue and gold harem outfit, and her ample bosom bounced a little as she stretched and took in a deep breath.
Master Liam!
she said happily, I stand ready to serve you. Have you decided on your third wish?
I shook my head, Jazz had an innate desire to fulfill the wishes of whoever possessed her bottle, but if I made my third wish, then I’d never be able to call her forth again and I didn’t want that. I think I was falling for her.
I smiled, Nope, I just wanted to check on you and make certain you were recovering from making Barry into a genie.
Jazz gave me a wide, toothy grin, Indeed master, the gift of your seed and the day of rest have nearly replenished my strength. It has been many centuries since I needed to use the amount of power required to grant your second wish.
Nearly replenished?
I asked.
Yes, master. I am still somewhat tired, but I am more than able to serve you in whatever fashion you deem appropriate.
she told me.
I smiled, I think I know a way for you to get an energy boost.
Jazz gave me a wry grin, How would you like to enjoy me, master?
I turned that over in my head. I
