Call of the Grimoire - Ella Stone

London, 1 year before the events of Dark Creatures
If someone told you they belonged to a secret society that worked to maintain peace between vampires and humans, you would probably think they were insane, and likely make a hasty retreat. If, however, you did choose to indulge them, you might imagine their world was full of clandestine meetings and countless stakeouts, (pun intended). A daily battle between good and evil, in the fight to save humanity. Well, just so you know, it’s mostly sifting through data and preparing spreadsheets, staring at a screen until your eyes bleed. Not literally, obviously.
Is it time for a coffee break?
I peer over the top of my computer, to where Oliver is similarly inputting data at the desk opposite.
It’s nine fifteen, Rey
he says without looking up.
How on earth are we still not done with this yet? Why do we even need to do this?
Just think of it this way, once we’re done, that’s it until next week.
Please, somebody, shoot me now.
With an impressive groan, I flop my head down on the desk, as a throat clears behind me. I groan again, although this time I keep it inside. Of course, it’s Jessop. I swear he only keeps his office door ajar so he can spring out and catch me not working. Slowly I twist my head around to face him.
I’ve had a call about something happening over in Peckham,
he says, looking past me to Oliver. Some kids there are convinced they stumbled onto some kind of cult ritual place. Symbols on the floor, candles, dead animals.
Isn’t that pretty much any bar in Peckham?
Kingston asks from across on another computer, snorting in laughter at his own joke. Kingston’s a dick. And if you think his jokes are bad, you should see what he’s like in bed. Or rather don’t. It’s really not worth the four minutes of your life it’ll use up.
Ignoring Kingston in the same way that the rest of us do, Jessop carries on with what he was saying.
"It’s probably nothing, but you know how on edge the Vampire Council gets about anything related to witchcraft.’
If the VC is concerned then, surely, they’re the ones who should go and check it out,
I offer.
True,
Jessop agrees, but it’s outside their working hours.
Yup, this is something we come across repeatedly. Don’t expect there being any chance of a vampire helping maintain their own damn safety in the hours of nine ‘til five. Or four ‘til ten, if we’re on British summer time. Unsurprisingly, Blackwatch does not pay overtime.
Green, Grey. I want you two on this.
Green and Grey. Sound like code names, right? Sadly not that exciting. Just happens that both Oliver and I have colourful surnames. Andrea Green and Oliver Grey. That’s a superhero duo in the
