About this ebook

Have you wondered what the big deal is in Bitcoin?

Like you, I was too busy working and raising a family to figure out Bitcoin. It felt like the domain of digital cowboys, gamers, and boys with supercomputers in their basements.

Yet as time went on and Bitcoin's tremendous growth has made millionaires on the upside and bald men on the downside, I decided to look into it—mostly out of fear of missing out.

If Bitcoin is truly the future of money and it lives up to its promise as a non-inflating currency, then I want to not only get in on the action, but to understand the mathematics, economics, and culture behind it.

This book is for the busy woman who wants to discover Bitcoin and understand enough of its mathematics and technology in order to gain conviction on how she'll relate to Bitcoin.

  •          You will learn about sound and unsound money, and why Bitcoin can never be inflated.

  •          You will understand the way Bitcoin is created and why it is stronger and more secure than other cryptocurrencies.

  •          You will get an introduction on ways to invite Bitcoin into your life: exchanges, wallets, payment systems, affiliate rewards, and tax considerations.

  •          You will also get a dose of Bitcoin FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) and explore reasons why Bitcoin might not be the right date for you.

  •          Finally, you will be treated to a short list of influential women in the Bitcoin space to inspire you and let you know what can be done with Bitcoin to make the world a more equitable and inclusive place.

Is Bitcoin the future of money or false hope for a cult of fanatics?

Decide for yourself, and may the coin always bounce in your favor.

Is Bitcoin the future of money or false hope for a cult of fanatics?

Decide for yourself, and may the coin always bounce in your favor.

    Foreword

Dear reader, like you, I’m a busy woman who’s been hearing about Bitcoin on and off for the last ten years and wondering what it’s all about. At first, I thought it was currency in a computer game. Later, I figured it was fun money for dudes in basements buying pizzas with their made-up money. I didn’t have time on my hands or an extra rack of servers in my garage, so I went along merrily oblivious to how Bitcoin is changing our underlying monetary system.

    Wow. That’s a big claim, isn’t it?

In a nutshell, Bitcoin is digitized money that exists on a distributed network of unrelated computers and secured by hard mathematical problems called cryptography—the art of generating and solving codes.

Which is why Bitcoin is known as a cryptocurrency.

Why did I get interested in Bitcoin?

It all goes back to blockchain technology. Rachelle Ayala, my pen name, is a romance writer of over seventy-five books. Several years back, I undertook the Herculean effort of mailing physical books to the US Copyright office to secure a government copyright certificate. Needless to say, it was an immense and frustrating effort, and I lost many claims due to misunderstanding the number of physical copies to mail as well as having marketing content and excerpts inside my books.

    But I digress …

Blockchain technology allows authors, artists, and musicians to upload an immutable copy of their work. Once it is uploaded and added to the chain [after paying fees, of course], no one can come back and change your work or take away the fact that you uploaded this particular set of text at this time and date. Because of cryptography, your work is secured on the blockchain. The same can be said of contracts and deeds, and guess what? Money itself in the form of ledger entries.

And this is what Bitcoin is.

Ledgers are simply a list of transactions, and the Bitcoin blockchain includes every transaction ever made for each coin generated—or in Bitcoin parlance, mined.

Okay, before I bore you to death, I’ll talk about blockchain, cryptography, and mining in a later chapter, and I promise to keep it short. Suffice it to say, you don’t truly have to understand the mathematics behind it other than to trust that it is secure and hacker resistant.

You might be wondering why a romance author is so nerdy about tech.

Let me let you in on a secret.

My real name persona has a Ph.D. Applied Mathematics from Cornell. My favorite mathematic topics are combinatorics, analysis of algorithms, and parallel computing. I was old enough to get into all the exciting times of technology: the transformation from mainframes to personal computing, text-based user interfaces
