    ALPHAbet - Marzia Bosoni

    To Francesco

    who was just a thought

in the dreams forgotten at dawn

    A

    a

A was the first letter ever written.

When the pencil traced on the paper the three lines forming A, the man was glad to see them—A was straight, tall and sharp. It was a really pretty letter! A too was pleased of herself and always walked head held high. She liked Ants and AirplAnes and AppAlAchiAns (not because she was American but because there was the plenty of four A in their name).

Long time A was the alphabet's queen but, you know, even queens grow old.

So, little by little, A began to bow and became A.

But her years were heavier and heavier and also her wonderful shape was affected...

... until, one day, the queen of the letters looked in the mirror and saw a curved and fat old lady—a.

Poor a was desperate, but soon her desperation turned into surprise and then in great joy. All her subjects, the other letters of the Alphabet who had looked at her for centuries in reverence and fear, now smiled at her, a bit more relaxed. The queen's new shape was less proud, but definitely nicer!
