Isat at the table in our dining alcove across from Dad, my precious tablet clutched tightly to my chest. My heart beat rapidly, but I maintained a carefully neutral expression. Dad leaned forward, his hands resting on the permaplastic surface of the table. Mom stood off to one side, feet slightly spread in her ready-for-anything stance, hands clasped behind her back.

Detective-in-training Chou, Mom said, in accordance with our agreement you will unlock your tablet and surrender it for inspection.

Sir, yes sir! I responded. Pressing my thumb to the activation screen, I licked my lips and handed my tablet to Dad. As you can see, sir, my case files are correctly labeled and saved appropriately.

Dad swiped the screen, smiled, and glanced at me, one eyebrow raised. "The Case Files of Cinnamon Chou, Space Station Detective. Really? That’s a very ambitious title, Sugar Cookie."

My face heated, but I held my gaze steady and managed not to roll my eyes. Parents. They’re incorrigible. No matter how many times I asked Dad not to call me Sugar Cookie, he persisted. His excuse? Force of habit.
