    About Delta James

    PROLOGUE

Among one of the tribes of ancient, indigenous people who once roamed the Idaho Panhandle, there is a legend about the daughter of a mighty shaman who fell in love with a mountain lion. His strength, honor, and courage allowed him to leave the coils of the beast behind and become human. Her father cast a powerful curse on all those who followed them. The children would never be truly one with either lion or human but would have the ability to shift between the two worlds. This story, passed down between the generations, became known as the Legend of Koyama' .

    CHAPTER 1

    Ten Years Ago…

16.76 seconds. Hannah shook herself mentally and physically. If she was going to beat Gillian’s time, she’d have to focus on the job at hand: winning the world championship. She’d watched as Gillian crossed the finish line of her incredible run. This is it, thought Hannah as she gathered herself and her Appaloosa gelding, Cricket.

Leaning down, she whispered to him, If ever I needed your strength, courage, and speed, it’s now. The boys and I are depending on you, old friend.

Hannah knew Cricket was prepared and would take care of her. She’d been there when Cricket had taken his first breath and she now performed her most dangerous riding and fanciest roping tricks with him. Cricket shifted his weight to his powerful hind quarters. When she gave him the signal, he pushed off, leaping at full speed before crossing the starting line.

15.86 seconds later, it was over. She’d won! She could do it. She could take the prize money and hand Cyrus his walking papers. She’d divorce the sonofabitch. She, her sons, and Koyama', her family’s heritage ranch, would be safe.

She looked down over the sprawling landscape from the top of Himeen Mesa. After three months, it was almost done. All she needed to do was finalize a bit of estate paperwork to ensure Cyrus got nothing, but the divorce was nearly finalized.

The sound of approaching footsteps from behind shouldn’t have been a surprise, nor should the force of the rock hitting the back of her skull, which didn’t knock her out completely, not right away. The hard-packed ground rushed to meet her. Struggling to stay conscious, she barely felt the rope she’d used for her tricks being twined around one of her ankles. She floundered, losing the fight against the darkness creeping over her—perhaps, a mercy. The last thing she saw was the shadow of someone near her saddle, and the last sound she heard was the crack of a hand as it slapped Cricket on the rump hard enough to spook him.

Her head hit another rock, casting her into darkness while the gelding galloped for home, dragging her unconscious body behind.

Why are we waiting for him? asked Clay, the youngest of Hannah’s sons.

Wayne Nelson, the family’s attorney, was the first to answer. For the same reason we can’t do this tomorrow. We need all of the recipients here for the reading of the will.

He’s just jerking us around, Clay, said Cash, the second of the brothers in line.

Cole, the brother born between Cash and Clay, opened the fridge. Wayne? Can I get you a beer?

    I’ll have one, said Clay.

I didn’t ask you little brother, because I already knew the answer. Wayne?

    Thanks, Cole. I’d like that.

Cole grabbed five beers, handing one to each of his brothers and to the lawyer. Just as he sat down, Cyrus, their father, joined them.

I’ll take one of those, boy, he snarled.

Then get off your ass and get it yourself, said the eldest of Hannah’s sons, Cade, in a pleasant voice.

You four better start treating me with a little bit more respect, said Cyrus, walking to the fridge.

Cole took a drink and replied. You do something one of us can respect and we’ll consider it.

Cyrus growled and Cade stepped between his father and brother. Shut up and sit down Cyrus. Cole? Knock it off. He waited until the two potential combatants had retreated to neutral corners and taken their seats.

Do you want to sit down Cade? asked the attorney.

No, considering the terms of mom’s will, it’s probably best if somebody is ready to keep the peace.

And you figure being in Delta Force you’re the best man for the job? asked Cash.

Better than if I was a SEAL, quipped Cade. Cash had just graduated from Annapolis and was headed to California for SEAL training.

What do you know about your mother’s will? I was her husband. It all comes to me, right? Cyrus said looking at the attorney.

Do you want me to do a formal reading of the entire will or just do the bequests?
