Introduction
Dale furrowed his brow and slapped himself. Gotta do it. Boss ain’t gonna want me not doing it well. I feel horrible about it, but it must be done. I think… Dale shook his head and slashed at the cottage. Track screamed and cried. Past Pawprint trembled. Everyone, OUT!
Cloak got a pet carrier and shoved the pets inside. She ran outside. Pawprint grabbed a wailing Track and sped out. They rushed out just as Dale destroyed the cottage.
Past Cloak and Track cried, and, for once, so did Pawprint.
Chapter One
Crash! Thud! Oof, Dale!
Cloak opened one eye. Pawprint twitched her ear. Track buried deeper into his hammock. Pawprint looked at her alarm clock. Three in the morning? Who makes such a ruckus at THREE in the MORNING? Silver, Buddy, and Tricky eyed their owners nervously, but when they saw that they were trying to nestle back into bed, they calmed down and slept too. Until, a few hours later, they were awoken by an eerie, echoey voice. It belonged to a phantom.
Track threw his pillow at the phantom. It missed by a millimeter. The monster grabbed the pillow and threw it at Track, with a huge grin on its face.
Dale! No smiling on the job!
Another phantom yelled. Dale apologized and removed his creepy smirk. Pawprint and Cloak eyed the phantoms. Then, a third phantom appeared. Why so many phantoms? Cloak wondered as the second phantom who was so mean to Dale charged at Track. Dale muttered something under his breath.
Luckily, Track is a super swift meerkat and dodged just as the phantom was near. But something wasn’t right. He was never THIS fast. Dale stifled a laugh, then quickly covered his mouth with one of his ghastly tentacles. The second phantom scowled, then turned to Cloak and Pawprint. You two are next...
It breathed.
Pawprint looked at Cloak, then winked. She has a plan. Cloak thought. Let’s just hope it’s a safe one this time. Cloak and Track were used to having Pawprint come up with convoluted plans. Some were risky, but they always worked. Cloak wondered how she had come to be so smart. Pawprint always got straight A’s in Anzea Township Public School, but she wasn’t snobby like all the other smart students. She was the kindest coyote in the school, maybe even the kindest in Anzea. Cloak and Track were good students, and got no lower than B’s, but when it came to coming up with plans, they let Pawprint do all the work.
Pawprint crouched onto their couch, letting Buddy the lynx and Silver the sugar glider hop on. Cloak held on to the coyote. She was nowhere near as athletic as her and Track, so she would need some help crossing the phantoms. Pawprint jumped and landed on the second phantom, then the third, and jumped over Dale. He was innocent. Sort of.
Track scooped up Tricky and placed him in his green drawstring bag. He then raced away, on the same path as Pawprint: second phantom, third phantom, jump over Dale. He followed Pawprint, and the phantoms followed him. He looked behind him and gulped. Then, he sprinted in front of the coyote, pointing at the phantoms.
Pawprint smiled and whispered something in Track’s ear. He nodded and ran towards the monsters. He bowed at them, and then started dancing. The second and third phantoms looked confused, while Dale danced along to Track’s moves. Then, Track jumped up and POW! Kicked the first and second phantom, while Dale kept on dancing. They fell to the ground, groaning, until Track kicked them off of their den.
Dale clapped and cheered, as if it were part of his show. Then, realizing it wasn’t, shrieked and dove down after his ‘friends’. Track ran and caught up with the gang. They laughed as the phantoms fell into the lake under their home. Splash!
Cloak hopped off of Pawprint and followed Track back to their room. The coyote
