    BLAM! BLAM!

Two bullets crashed through the passenger side windshield of the paddy wagon and they would have hit Elvis in the face except for the fact that he was hanging out the door window returning fire!

It started like most nights involving police patrol work. A routine radio call from dispatch.

I was working with Jack Coleman in Old North Dayton and since we were the only two man crew working in the First District on the midnight shift that night, we got the call even though it was not on our beat.

Our assignment was to meet the house detective at the Biltmore hotel on the downtown beat concerning a disorderly woman who was causing a scene.

It was standard procedure for dispatch to limit information transmitted on calls since at that time we only had one primary portable radio channel for the east side of town, and the logic was that officers would find out what was really going on as soon as they arrived.

We arrived at the Biltmore, Dayton’s version of a grand, old downtown hotel. The building had aged some from its original glory but was still a very fine hotel.

We met the night detective and he motioned us to the elevator. We asked what had prompted the call, and he acted surprised that we didn’t already know. He advised us that the problem was a loud disorderly woman in Elvis’ row of suites and that the entourage did not want her arrested, merely removed from the premises.

We walked into the hotel room and found her standing with about twelve people circled around her.

She was obviously intoxicated and yelling very loudly, I want my Wally!

We learned that she was the former girlfriend of a member of Elvis’ inner circle and she had previously traveled with Wally and the group when they were on tour. She also hung out with Elvis and his friends when they were all in Memphis.

Since Dayton was within driving distance of Memphis, she had asked her sister to drive her here so she could reunite with Wally that night.

She knew she could not get past security at the show at the University of Dayton Arena, so like most of the avid fans hoping to get a glimpse of Elvis, she came to the hotel to wait until the show was over.

As she waited in the hotel bar, she let everyone know that she was part of the entourage and she regaled the crowd with stories of traveling with Elvis’ group and hanging out with them in Memphis.

Naturally, she didn’t have to buy a drink herself, and the crowd kept them coming.

When they figured the show was over, the sisters took the elevator to one floor below the Elvis block of suites and then took the stairs to one floor above his block.

They each got an ice bucket and filled them and then walked one flight down onto Elvis’ floor.

Fire Department regulations would not allow the doors at each end of the hallway to be locked so there was a security guard at each door.

They were stopped as soon as they opened the door, but she told security that they were with Elvis’ group and that she was Wally’s girlfriend.

She then blurted out several passwords that were used on prior trips and apologized for drinking too much and held up the ice buckets as if that explained everything.

One of the passwords worked and the guard let them pass.

They made their way down the hallway to an open door and walked into the after-show party.

Wally saw her first and wisely slipped into the adjacent suite since they kept the connecting room doors open. The last room in the line of suites belonged to Elvis, and that door could be closed when he was ready to get some rest as the party continued in the adjoining rooms.

The group assessed the situation immediately and formed an informal circle around her to limit her movement, but they all seemed to like her, and no one tried to touch her or usher her out.

So, like many situations we were called to, we were there to be the bad guys.

We informed her that she had to leave. Like most drunk people, she did not comply. We might as well have been talking to the wall.

I explained the situation to her sister and one of the guys in the group listened in. I told her that we really didn’t want to take her to jail, but we couldn’t just leave them outside the hotel because we knew that she would try to get back up to the rooms.

I asked the sister if they had a place to stay for the night and she answered no.

    The guy who had been
