What’s true for one person is true for all; we are all made out of ordinary dust. What makes us extraordinary is God’s special ingredient, His breath of life. Like grass withers and flowers fade, our life is brief and seen by few. What makes every person unique is an extraordinary inner beauty. Each life has a purpose; every life is precious, and every life should be treated as such.
How should we live this purposeful life? Love Jesus, others, and yourself—JOY. When meekness flows from within, outward, it is possible to touch the lives of others. For us to be caregivers, kindness must flow out of our hearts. And, so the story goes, in Firestone.
Image4165.JPGHuber studied the mob at the airport with a frown on his face. Some vacation,
he murmured to himself. They were on Christmas break from school; it was close to Christmas, and he was in a foul mood. His Mom and Dad had planned this trip for three years, both taking on part-time jobs to earn extra money to spend Christmas in Liberia. How far was Liberia from Atlanta anyway? As far as the moon, he thought. Huber overheard his parents say the trip cost close to sixteen thousand dollars. He didn’t get it; why did they want to spend Christmas, of all the days in the year, in a place with no plumbing, no electricity, no cable, no phone, and especially no snow. So, he thought. Huber wasn’t sure if Santa got that far and he didn’t care. He’d outgrown the Santa coming down the chimney story, anyhow, but still. All his buddies would be in Atlanta having fun, and he would be in Africa. What a shame!
Ya’ll will have fun,
Cecelia promised the children for the hundredth time, staring at them, smiling.
They were following the line, boarding pass in hand, marching down the concourse. The family walked by tiny airport shops packed with people, and when they passed Santa Claus with the clapping bell, Huber looked at his mom, then his dad, and finally his younger sister. Everyone seemed eager. Mylaeka gazed at Santa, hand clutched in Cecelia’s hand, and Lollipop strapped tightly against her back. She didn’t look happy or sad. As long as Mylaeka had everything she cared about in that pink backpack of hers, a bag made in the shape of a poodle she’d named Lollipop, she was okay.
Before leaving the house, Mylaeka made sure her Kindle, iPod, and digital camera were tucked away in Lollipop for safekeeping. All her power chargers were packed too. She smiled at the thought of making extra money, knowing Huber would forget to pack his charger and might need to use hers. Then, she would charge him fifty cents each time. By the end of the family’s last vacation, Mylaeka was six dollars richer. Every penny she made came from Huber needing to charge his gadgets.
Varney instructed his driver, Moussa, to pick up Wicky, Cecelia, and their two children from Roberts International Airport early Monday morning and
