Harvey J White
For the past thirty years Dr. Harvey J. White has dedicated himself to direct patient care, clinical research, and leadership activities designed to improve both individual lives and our healthcare delivery system. Building on a career in interventional cardiology, including the acute treatment of heart attack and stroke patients, Dr. White is the founder and executive director of Vessel Health, a medical enterprise pioneering prevention in the achievement of cardiovascular well-being. Former creator and medical director of the Heart Hospital of New Mexico, he has served as president of the Greater Albuquerque Medical Association, governor of the American College of Cardiology, president of the American Heart Association, and leader of the Southwest Heart Foundation. Anchored in a profession that began as a fix-it approach for episodic health challenges, Dr. White has concluded that we, as individuals and as a society, must enhance our focus on prevention and take a proactive approach to maintaining the health of our circulatory system and promoting our personal well-being. Through Vessel Health he supports his commitment to heart health as well as to the health of the greater community. His philosophy in a nutshell: "Treat the system, not the symptom."

Preface
A career in medicine is a curious experience. The naïve student starts the first day enthusiastic but nervous. Although conditioned by early life events, each student is being groomed to fill a vital role in society. The days are steeped in scientific learning. First, the healthy human body. How does it develop and how does it function? Next, illnesses. Names of conditions meant to confuse. The long days and nights of toil seem endless. Eventually, graduation, followed by many years of supervised practical experience—the modern-day apprenticeship.
The outcome is an expert,
likely still naïve to the greater world, but poised to contribute and fill the role imbued with the seriousness of the title Doctor of Medicine.
It is only then that the real learning begins. It is only then that responsibility begins to weather and shape the person. It is only then that daily interaction with patients begins to educate the doctor’s soul.
And the process takes years. Along the way the physician endures the challenges of his or her own life experiences. And finally, after decades of being a student of life as well as medicine, the
