Chapter 1
The Beginning
Twenty-five-year-old Ciniya Parnell was strolling around Times Square, looking at all the lights around her. After she glanced at her phone for the time, she saw a man walk past her. Then she tripped and fell to the ground.
Oh, my bad,
the man said sadly.
It’s cool.
She gave him a small smile.
After that, they went their separate ways.
Two months later, at the hottest club in Brooklyn, the Loungers, Ciniya was having a couple of drinks with her high school friend, Na’Jae.
As she was ordering her third drink, a man came up and sat next to her. I’ll have the same thing she’s having.
Ciniya looked up to see the same guy she had seen two months earlier in Times Square.
Oh, hey. What’s up?
the guy asked, getting her attention.
Nothing much. How’ve you been?
she answered. Na’Jae was looking at her with worried eyes.
Pretty good … since the incident.
He laughed.
Oh yeah!
Ciniya laughed. That was so funny!
As they continued talking, Ciniya told Na’Jae that this guy, Steve, was kinda cute. And Steve thought the same about her. Before they went their separate ways, Steve asked for Ciniya’s number so they could talk further. She gave it to him.
As Ciniya and Na’Jae left the bar and got into their car, Na’Jae asked, Ciniya, what was that?
What was what?
That guy?
Na’Jae was getting annoyed.
You honestly have nothing to worry about. We’re friends now.
Okay, just making sure. I don’t want what happened to me to happen to you,
Na’Jae said to her with sad eyes.
Don’t worry, Na’Jae. That’s why you’re here to protect me. But thank you for worrying.
Ciniya hugged Na’Jae.
Na’Jae had given birth to a baby girl when she was twenty years old. The baby’s father was Na’Jae’s late husband, a serial killer. He had been executed in the electric chair for murdering more than thirty girls and women. She blamed herself for not knowing and being oblivious to the situation. Ever since then, Na’Jae had not been able to trust anyone completely and never let anyone close to her daughter unless they were friends or family.
After a month of being friends, Steve texted Ciniya around eleven one morning and said he wanted to meet her at Starbucks before the lunch rush. She agreed, and twenty-five minutes later, they met at the Starbucks by Kings Highway.
They ordered their coffee, and then Steve said, So Ciniya, there’s a reason why I asked you to meet up with me.
He took a sip of his coffee.
Well, I kind of figured you were somewhat off recently. Is everything okay?
Ciniya asked with worried eyes.
Yeah, everything’s fine. I had just wanted to ask you a question that’s been on my mind for a while,
Steve said nervously.
Oh, okay. Well, what’s the question?
Ciniya was curious.
I know we haven’t been friends long, but would you like to be my girlfriend?
Steve said casually.
Of course I would. Let’s give it a shot.
Ciniya smiled happily.
He grinned. All right.
Throughout the next two years of dating, they went to many places together, like the mall, a bowling alley, movie theaters, fast-food places and nice restaurants, and Brooklyn Bridge Park.
As Steve was dropping Ciniya home one day, he popped the question. Ciniya, I’ve known you for a while now, and I love you with all my heart. I want to spend the rest of my life with you.
As he got down on one knee, he asked, So will you marry me?
He was tearing up.
Ciniya was staring at him and crying. Yes, yes, to infinity!
she cried.
I love you so much.
Steve hugged her.
Love you too,
Ciniya answered back.
The next day, Ciniya and Steve met up at Kings Plaza to discuss when they should tell their families about their engagement. They ate at Chipotle.
So when should we tell them?
Steve took a bite out of his burrito bowl.
I think tomorrow would be best.
She sipped her Sprite.
Yeah, you’re right.
Steve and Ciniya got their families together to share the news with them.
Welcome, everyone. I know that this time may not work with you right now, so we will try our very best to keep it quick,
Ciniya said with a bright smile.
Nothing will be long because we only have one thing to tell you. I popped the question the day before yesterday, and she agreed,
Steve said with a giant grin.
As everyone was congratulating them, there was only one person who didn’t trust Steve: Ciniya’s very own brother, William.
Chapter 2
Preparations
Over the next five months, Steve and Ciniya planned the wedding. Or they tried to. But there were a lot of things just to get the preparations together, and because of all this, Ciniya was getting really stressed out. She was starting to give up.
Steve was at her house in Carroll Gardens, discussing the wedding decorations. Ciniya lived in a place where the neighborhood was not only quiet but also known for its Italian roots. It had lots of different shops and cafés.
As he was speaking about what he thought the colors should be, William stopped by her house to catch up. And he too got caught in the mess of all the wedding planning. He was off at the side and watching Ciniya getting stressed and all worked up about the whole thing.
He said, Um, Steve, I think you should take it down a notch.
Why is it any of your business right now?
Steve snapped back with an agitated tone.
They got up and walked toward each other slowly.
Because you are clearly getting Ciniya more stressed out about this whole thing,
William said calmly.
"I
