    The Greatest Gift of All: Immanuel-God with Us-Gift

    Witnesses

    The second chapter of Luke tells of witnesses to the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, Immanuel (God with us), who is the greatest gift of all. John 3:16 says, For God so loved the World; that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

    First, witness the angel and the shepherds regarding the Jewish custom for taxes, which was first instituted when Cyrenius was governor of Syria. During that time, Caesar Augustus decreed that the world should be taxed. Joseph and his betrothed fiancée, Mary, went up from Galilee to the city of David called Bethlehem, for Joseph was of the house and lineage of David.

    Mary gave birth to her firstborn child, and it was a holy birth by the filling of the Holy Spirit, for she had known no man (Luke 1:26–31). Luke 1:31 says, And, behold, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call His name Jesus. The angel Gabriel, who gave witness about the coming of the Savior, spoke to the Virgin Mary: For with God nothing shall be impossible.

    In Matthew 1:18–25, Joseph also heard this witness when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and told him to marry his wife and not secretly put her away as he had intended. The angel said to Joseph, Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save his people from their sins. When Joseph awoke from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had told him and married Mary. Verse 25 says, And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn Son; and Joseph called His name Jesus. Joseph’s obedience to God and his gentle nature (he was a just man) are worthy of our
