Introduction
One of the most interesting areas in all of Integrative Medicine is the use of herbs or herbal medicine, a bunch of what we see as the conventional medical pharmacopeia, all the prescriptions that we have are derived from herbals. If you look worldwide you see that in all the Traditions around the world. They're always herbals, for instance, aspirin actually was willow tree bark and that contains a substance known as salicylic acid, salicylic acid is the basis for aspirin and that was actually made into a tablet. And so that's just one example now, why would a person be at all interested in herbals? Because once they are effective, there's a vast amount of research largely outside of the United States on the effectiveness of herbal medicines. They have fewer side effects because they have lower potency, Lower toxicity, then you have fewer side effects and they can be very effective. They do interact with some forms of conventional medicine. So it is one of those areas where if you're going to begin to take herbal medicines for a condition you really should check with an herbalist or a practitioner who's knowledgeable to be sure you're not creating an interaction effect with your commonly used medications. So that's a one caution short of that. They can be very effective right now. Here are a number of really common herbs and common uses that are proven to be effective.
There is herbal Echinacea. It's actually a flower and that is very effective with colds and flu. So if a person feels a cold and flu coming on, if you begin to take Echinacea tablets, they're usually capsule form, if taken every three or four hours for a day or two, it can really blunt the effects. The research shows you that it is at least as effective as the Tamiflu and Relenza in terms of shortening the impact of the flu.
Another common one is red rice yeast, there was a study in one of the medical journals recently that shows it is a Statin. It's the same drug that you use in potent form for lowering cholesterol, that for people who have side effects from some of the statin drugs. They can actually use red rice yeast and again it comes in a capsule. It's available in health food stores even some Safe way stores or Food Markets.
This one is very common, St. John's Wort, St. John's Wort has extensive research in Germany. It's very effective for mild to moderate depression. So these are effective. Now, that is one meaning that St. John's Wort is effective. But if a person is on a common antidepressant that's a drug you need to really talk to your doctor. So my general advice is these are just examples of how potent and effective some herbs can be if you want to try them you really should speak with an herbalist, someone who really knows how to use these.
Although it is something that is powerful enough to work, it's powerful enough to harm. So these are potentially potent. So I would work with an herbalist or work with the practitioner physician or other practitioners who are knowledgeable about this and you'll be surprised at how many common illnesses and chronic diseases can be managed very effectively using herbal medicine either as primary care or as an adjunct to the medication and therapies you're already undergoing.

What is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is the practice of using medicinal plants for their medicinal benefits. Herbal medicine has been used worldwide throughout history. The world health organization estimates that around 80% of the world's population use herbal medicine and natural remedies for their primary health care needs. There are thousands of plants throughout the world that have medicinal uses. Many of them are used in medicine to make pharmaceutical drugs.
What is herb?
The word herb implies different things to different people and the definitions vary according to the area of interest and personal advice. Herbs are the plant that has medicinal benefits depending on the herb. The medicinal benefits can be derived from the aerial parts, the leaves, seeds, the flower or the roots. Herb also can be described as a joke as it's the substance that has physiological effect when ingested into the body in various bunches. The word herb usually implies a plant that has a healing remedy either in its raw form or as a source for pharmacologically active chemicals.
There are many tons of medicinal plants throughout the world with a wide range of action and degrees of potency. Most have a specific action on a particular body system and are known to be suitable for treating certain types of ailments for example, depression, diabetes or heart disease.
Is there evidence to support herbal medicine?
Yes, there is. There are two sources that we use,
-The first is traditional from tradition for thousands of years. The use of traditional medicine provides us with one of the longest clinical trials in history to demonstrate the effectiveness of herbal medicine because these herbal medicines would not have been used if they have no health benefits.
-The second is the clinical practice. Practicing herb lists have a wealth of knowledge from clinical practice with patients that support the effectiveness of different herbs for different conditions. I'm totally from evidence-based research. There is a growing body of evidence of research from clinical trials that support the effectiveness of numerous herbs for their medicinal benefits.
How does herbal medicine work?
Medicinal herbs are packed with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential for good health and well-being besides their content being nutrients. Plants also synthesize secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and volatile oils that have disease preventive properties. Herbs also high in antioxidants which had to repair and protect cells from oxidative stress which have been linked to heart disease, liver problems, arthritis, premature aging, and eye damage. Herbal medicine also used to support the nervous system such as anxiety and depression.
We know from research that chronic stress is been linked to six of the leading causes of death in United states which are Cancer, Coronary heart disease, Accidental injury, Respiratory disorder, Cirrhosis of the liver and Suicide.
Herbs are also antimicrobial as they can offer a powerful defense against pathogenic bacteria. Humanity is facing a major problem with antibiotic resistance due to overuse of antibiotic, more and more of bacteria are resistant to antibiotics. In the United States alone, more than 22000 people die each year from antibiotic-resistant infections. Another powerful way herbs can reinforce our health is by strengthening the immune system which is our best defense against pathogens that lead to disease and illness. Herbs can also be used to improve digestion, digestion is involved in transforming food into nutrients. Most chronic diseases begin with poor digestion.
Is Herbal Medicine safe and effective?
Yes, the most commonly used herbs are safe but plants also produce side effects so should be used with caution. Also when a patient combines herbal products with conventional medicine drugs, herbal interaction can occur so it's essential that you use certain herbal medicine under the guidance of a qualified herbalist to avoid adverse consequences.
