Peter Griffiths

Author Peter Griffiths was born in rural Queensland, Australia, in 1945. The world he lives in now has changed enormously since then, and two of his memories help give context to some of the changes taking place since his early years. The first was in 1957, when he went outside at night to watch the pinpoint of light that was the sputnik satellite travel across the sky. The second was in 1969 while serving in Vietnam and listening to the broadcast of the first moon landing. Peter has condensed seventy-five years of life experience and observation into his debut book. Over his working life, he has lived and worked in most states of Australia and for many years owned an export business operating throughout Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific. During these years he met and worked with a diverse mix of interesting colourful and sometimes unique characters. He spent time in different and interesting places and had exposure to a wide range of ideas and cultures. Through his interactions and experiences over the years, he became increasingly aware that there are still many aspects of our natural world that we do not understand. That awareness, and the freedom of retirement, has allowed him to spend the time reviewing these years and insights, and attempt to put them into a logical context.

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to my wife Jenny who has always encouraged me in my writing, even in the times when I spent more time talking about it rather than actually doing it. But like pregnancy and birth, this book came together in its own good time, and I am rather proud of it.

    Preface

Some seventy-five years ago, I was born into a world very different to the one that I live in today. It was 1945. The Second World War had just finished, and there was a sense of relief and optimism in the air as people set about rebuilding their lives and relationships. For many it was a fresh beginning, and my parents started from scratch as share farmers in Southern Queensland’s Mary Valley just a few months before I was born.

We lived on a relatively isolated farm without electricity or telephone, which was pretty well normal for rural areas at that time. But it was a beautiful place. The old farmhouse was set on top of a ridge with mountains and valleys all around. There was also still a significant amount of rainforest on the property. A visit to the nearest town while my parents did the monthly shopping was a big adventure. Other than that, I spent the first five years of my life wandering around our farm by myself as there were no other children within walking distance.

I don’t remember much of my very early years; however, as a toddler, I do have one vivid memory of Dad picking me up and sitting me on the back of one of the draft horses he used when ploughing the farm. The memory I have of this is it was just like sitting on the kitchen table as the horse’s back was so broad that my legs just stuck straight out.

The first five years before I started school had a very formative effect on me. They gave me absolutely no idea how to mix and play with other children. However, I did develop an affinity with the natural world and became very self-reliant (many years later my mother said it was a wonder I was not taken by a python as I wandered around the farm alone).

My understanding of school was that it was somewhere that you just had to go until you were sixteen. So at age sixteen I left school and took up the first apprenticeship that I could find, which happened to be as a motor mechanic. By the time I was nineteen, the urge to see what life was like outside of a country town had become strong enough for me to set out and find my own way in the world.

Fast-forward eighteen months to when I met an interesting young lady in Sydney. While my conversation skills were still very underdeveloped, some of our chats awoke a part of my
