Wendy Has A Choice To Make - Christy Wilburn Nobella Webb

    Prologue

The August sun beat down on Wendy’s strawberry-blonde hair as she walked to the field across the street from her home, and she wished she had brought a cool lemonade to drink or some ice water to keep the heat at bay. She reached into a pocket of her Levi shorts and pulled a rubber band out to wrap her long hair in, twisting it into a ponytail and then winding it around several times until she could secure it into a bun. She had thought about cutting her hair many times over the summer because of its thickness and the fact that it hung down to the top of her shorts, adding extra heat, which she didn’t need this time of year, but decided not to due to all the positive attention she had received about its length and color. She was a petite girl with beautiful sapphire-blue eyes, an average nose and lips, and a significant smattering of freckles that she had tried for years to cover up. Her hourglass figure and spunky personality more than made up for her dreadful freckles.

She arrived at her favorite spot in the field where she loved to go and ponder and took a seat on the large rock while she hurriedly slipped off her sandals. She couldn’t wait to scoot forward so she could slide her feet into the cool, refreshing water. She glanced around her secluded retreat and sighed contentedly as she contemplated all the things she wanted to think about.

The summer had raced by like all the previous summers since starting junior high school. She wondered where all the time had gone. Was she really going to be starting her last year of high school in another few weeks? In October, she would be turning eighteen on her birthday and would be considered an adult! Now that was a frightening thought!

With the passage of time, she was now able to think calmly about the time when Darsha had viciously cut her hair and all the drama that had gone along with that incident. Darsha and her friends had been placed on probation and as a result of their actions, had had to stay after school cleaning gum off desks, along with other menial tasks the janitor needed performed. Wendy could still picture the vengeful looks that Darsha directed her way whenever they happened to come in contact; however, both understood that if Darsha acted on any of her bitter feelings, she would be expelled from school. Wendy had been surprised when Darsha and her family had moved out of the area at the end of the school year. Actually it had been a huge relief, and Wendy was thankful that Darsha’s friends seemed to melt into the background and she didn’t have to worry about encountering any more of their cruel or nasty meetings.

As the wind stirred Wendy’s hair, she turned her thoughts to Russell Rogers and couldn’t help smiling. He was still working hard at wooing her with his ways, as he put it, and she had to secretly admit she was loving every minute of it. She was still in awe that she could have feelings for a boy that she considered her mortal enemy in her grade school days. Her mother’s predictions may just come true, and she might even marry this bully one day.

For now, Wendy was determined to enjoy each day that came her way and couldn’t help wondering what would be in store for her in her senior year of high school!

    Chapter 1

Wendy was relaxing in her secluded hideaway from the world while sitting on a large rock with her feet splashing in the cool water in a small stream that wound its way through the field across the street from her home. She could solve her own problems here, and maybe even some of the world’s problems in her favorite spot. The August sun was hotter than she liked, and it seemed determined to beat its rays down on her strawberry-blonde head, but she knew that in another few weeks, the fall breezes would begin to make their presence known, and slowly the summer season would give way to cooler temperatures. Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard a familiar tune being whistled by none other than Russell Rogers.

Hello, Russell, Wendy replied with a cheerful giggle.

Well, hello, Red! Fancy meeting you here today! How’s my favorite girl in the whole world?

I’m trying not to bake in this sun! I thought you were working today, Wendy answered, while turning to look at him.

I thought I was too, but at the last minute, one of the guys at the shop asked if I could trade days off with him. I didn’t really want to because I’ll have to miss Friday’s movie night, but it was an unexpected situation, and I couldn’t say no. I wanted to come over and let you know so you wouldn’t worry. He opened a bag he was carrying and said, I didn’t want you to think I was ignoring you or mad at you, so I’m giving this to you now.

Wendy reached for the bag and looked inside to see a box of Red Hots and a box of Good & Plenty.

Yummy! Wendy replied while smacking her lips in anticipation of eating the delicious treats. I don’t know if I can wait until tomorrow night. Would you like to share a box with me now?

No, I know how much you love your candy. I’m just happy to spend a few minutes with you. Are you getting all ready for school? Got your shopping list for clothes all made? I know how much you love clothes and shoes.

Not quite, but I’m getting there. I would ask you the same question, but I already know how you feel about that stuff, Wendy replied.

Well, since clothes are so important to you, Red, I am trying to spiff up my wardrobe to keep you interested in me, he said, winking at her.

Wendy had always loved the deep dimple in his left cheek that would regularly make an appearance when Russell exuded happiness. I’m happy to hear you’re working on it, Russell, as I’d hate to pass you by for another guy that dresses better.

I hope you’re kidding me, Red. Now you’ve got me a little worried. Sounds like I will need to kick up my ‘wooing’ a notch or two.

Before answering him, she paused to stare at him, admiring his all-boy good looks, from his tousled dark brown hair that curled slightly in the back over the collar of his shirt to his eyes that were a dark green and at times appeared brown. He stood just under six feet, with wide shoulders that showed off his well-muscled arms. Clearing her throat, she said, I think you’re okay for now, Russell. I just enjoy teasing you and keeping you on your toes. After all, I do have to make up for all those years you pulled my hair and tormented me with snowballs.

You’ve got me there, Red, and all I can do is keep showing you that I’ve changed and treat you like the lady you deserve to be treated like.

Wendy smiled as she checked her watch and realized she needed to get going so she wouldn’t be late for work. I need to be on my way so I can shower and get ready for work myself.

What’s the name of that store in the mall you work at now? Russell asked.

    It’s called Claire’s Closet.

Do you still work for Mrs. Nelson cleaning her house?

No, but my sister Millie does. Millie’s not old enough to get a retail job yet, so I talked Mrs. Nelson into hiring Millie.

That was nice of you, Red.

I try to be nice at least once a week, Wendy said with a mischievous grin as she put her sandals on and started walking toward Russell.

Sounds like I might have caught you on your nice day, Russell said with a chuckle. May I hold your hand, and can we walk back to your house together?

I think I would enjoy that, Mr. Rogers. Wendy loved holding Russell’s hand and always marveled at the warmth and strength she felt when she did. I’ll miss you at the church movie tomorrow night, and I hope your day at work goes well.

Well, thank you, Red. You have a great evening at work, and I’ll see you at church on Sunday.

Thanks again for bringing me the candy. I love the way you woo me. Bye for now, Russell.

Before leaving, Russell gave Wendy a hug and kissed her gently on her cheek. Wendy waved goodbye and went inside.

Are you going to marry Russell someday? her brother Tim asked when she started walking into the kitchen.

Now why would you ask me that? Wendy questioned.

Well, I saw Russell hugging and kissing you.

He only kissed me on the cheek, Wendy hurriedly corrected Tim in case her mother happened to be listening.

That’s not what it looked like to me, Tim said while making kissing noises.

Brothers! Wendy declared loudly as she raced downstairs to take her shower and get ready for work.

Wendy loved her job at Claire’s Closet because she got to be the first one to see all the latest trends in clothing when they arrived weekly in the store, and being an employee, she received a fifty percent discount on anything she purchased. The challenging part was deciding which items to purchase when they were all so cute. All
