Introduction
Throughout my 15+ years of experience in the home and community-based service programs, I discovered that many new providers that I meet struggle to obtain clients. After they meet the requirements and receive their contract, they struggle to generate business for quite some time, and many fail to attract business at all.
When I started my business, I desired a guide or mentor to help me avoid some of the mishaps and pitfalls that I experienced along the way. I know that you may have the same need and desire. Therefore, I have created a mentor within this book to guide and instruct you, and I’m sharing the core strategies of this business so that you will have the best chances for success and sustainability while developing your home and community-based program.
This book will guide you through the start-up process, maintenance, staffing, operations, and more advanced concepts such as successfully navigating program audits. My hope is that after completing this book, you will develop into a leading provider in the home and community-based services industry while promoting the highest possible level of care to those who depend on you.
Chapter One
Compassion for the Industry
Working in the home and community-based services industry requires compassion for people and an understanding of the needs of the people in the community in which you serve. The industry has many challenges, and some of them require endurance, patience, and stamina. At the same time, there is a reward in helping vulnerable populations such as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, physical disabilities, and/or mental health disorders increase their quality of life.
At 12 years old, I knew I had a passion for working with children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
