    My Earlier Life

My life was average, 1960-1972. Two parents that stayed married, I played sports and was good at our basic 3, baseball, basketball and football. Well, not so good at basketball, horrible dribbler. A decent amount of common sense got me through school; I was no book worm, a trait I would later hand down to my boys.

    Turning Point

My sophomore year in high school was a turning point, my father dies of a heart attack (I was 14 years old) and I

was getting disenchanted with team sports. It seemed that no matter your contribution or lack thereof, it only mattered how the team performed. I discovered the sport of tennis. A guy had moved into town from Kansas City. Watching him play was to me like the fan of the ballet, watching a dancer. I learn at this point that if something really interests me, I go all in. I asked the Kansas City transplant to help me learn to play, he does. In the meantime, I would go to a court a few miles away and play tennis with a guy stationed at the Naval Air Station near Memphis. My learning curve was steepening, and I was starting to play against stiffer competition. I get the courage to play in my first tournament, the Memphis Public Parks tournament. I make it to finals of my first tournament and get beat in 3 sets by a guy that later becomes a friend, Ronnie Bran. I was so nervous during the match that I did not drink water.
