    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

When you are blessed with so many people as friends, past employers, and brother and sister professionals and teaching professionals, such as the 28,000+ members of PGA of America, it’s impossible to recognize or thank them all for their contributions to your knowledge and experience. Even so, I would like to recognize a few, including my father, Dr. Harold Putt, who taught my younger brother Harold and me this great game. He made great sacrifices, as did my mother, to allow me to play this great game.

My first golf professional was Andrew Petrick, who was the golf professional and club maker at the club where I grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio. Andy was always helpful, and he put me to work as a clerk in the golf shop at age thirteen so I could learn about clubs and the golf business.

Mr. Jack Bell, golf professional, teacher, and coach in Virginia, aided me tremendously when he allowed me to take my first golf professional job at the famed Medinah Country Club in Chicago. I cleaned close to a thousand sets of golf clubs per day at Medinah, but I did not know then that this job would be a great stepping-stone or that it would give me so much experience in preparation for my career. Jack was a great teacher and player, and he became the head golf professional at Twin Orchards, LaJolla Country Club and Greenbriar. He was the consummate professional, as he was a great player, teacher, and merchandiser. Playing, teaching, and merchandising was and is the backbone of the PGA of America.

I learned a great deal from Coach Bob Ellis of Texas A&M. Bob and I were brother professionals at Medinah. We both ended up in Texas, and we conducted several clinics together across Texas.

I owe so much to Sam Moore, the head professional at Las Colinas in Dallas, who hired me as his assistant golf professional. Being in Texas at Las Colinas Country Club, where my sister Mary Jane Tichner helped to finish raising me, and working with Sam was a great start to my career. Sam, a good teacher as well, helped me to learn the basics, but more than anything else, he gave me the opportunity to work at a great club in Texas. He didn’t know it then, but I met the love of my life—my soul mate, Sharon, my wife of thirty-eight years (so far, and going for sixty) and my whole life—at Las Colinas Country Club.

Sharon, thank you so much for helping me to live my life, for being my wife and the mother of my two wonderful girls, Sheri Ann and Shannon Leigh, and for sacrificing so much time, money, and energy to the world of golf. Without you, I could not have accomplished any of what I accomplished.

Mr. Rives McBee, also a golf professional at Las Colinas Country Club, helped me with the basics of teaching. Rives was a great player, having played the tour and won the 1973 National Club Professional Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Rives not only taught me a great deal about golf and the golf swing, but also taught me how to teach and about life in general. He was also principally responsible for helping me reach my next big step in my career when he went to bat for me in my effort to become the head golf professional at Horseshoe Bay Resort & Country Club. Rives treated me like a son. He was a brother, a father, an employer, but mostly my teacher.

Wayne Hurd gave me the opportunity to further my career at Horseshoe Bay, where I learned a great deal about golf and the business of golf. Wayne gave me the opportunity to work there, where I met

and became friends with many great golf teachers and celebrities. ⁴

Tom Turner Jr. and his father are awesome people, and they, along with Carl Voelkel, gave me an opportunity at Sonterra in San Antonio. Tommy and I have learned much from each other about the game that we both love. For three years in a row, Scott Newell, partner and close friend, traveled with me to Scotland, where we learned much about the world of golf from playing on the great courses that were on Scott’s bucket list.

I also learned from Dr. Gary Wiren, who has helped many golf professionals across the country. His book, Laws, Principles, and Preferences, is always in the minds of most good teachers. He helped me a great deal in the writing of this book, and he is one of my mentors.

I so much admire Mr. Jim Flick, and I will always be thankful for his insight and willingness to help other teachers.

Chuck Cook, another mentor, was very helpful in my career. Chuck hosted three Psychology Teaching and Playing Golf Schools with Bruce Summerhays, Dr. Richard Coop, and Rick Acton at my club at Sonterra in San Antonio. Chuck,
