()
About this ebook
No one ever said that the game of golf is easy. How often have you seen or bought a golf instruction book that claims to offer an improved technique or a swing fix – but which doesn’t tell you which part of your technique needs fixing?
In The Winning Golf Swing, renowned golf professional Kristian Baker gives you a practical, yet easy-to-follow path to better golf. Through a rigorous but simple process, Kristian will help you to address the problems in your game so that you can shoot better scores. With contributions from some of the top minds in golf, this book delivers a complete process for improvement.
– Use statistics (in a very straightforward way) to determine, factually, where your flaws are
– Understand how the club and ball interact at impact to create the 13 different types of ball flight
– Correct your swing through detailed instructions and colour illustrations
By reading this book you will gain great, factual knowledge. By applying the information in this book to your own game, you will be able to identify your mistakes quickly, properly understand them, and – most importantly – correct your destructive shots. The book also draws on the expertise of some of the brightest people in the game, including renowned mind coach Karl Morris, and Chris Sells, an expert in statistical analysis.

This book is a thank you to all of the golfers who I’ve been fortunate enough to teach for the past 20 years at The Wentworth Club. Without allowing me to help you with your golf, I would never have had so much enjoyment from the game and learnt so much about coaching.
To all of the hugely talented professionals with whom I’ve been so fortunate to meet and learn so much from – your generosity (not just with your time but also the sharing of your knowledge) will be forever appreciated.
A special thank you must go to the people who have helped make this book possible: Chris Sells – StrokeAverage.com, Karl Morris – The Mind Factor, Mark Bull – Bull3D, Emanuel Frauenlob – TrackMan Golf, Bertie Cordle – DST Golf, and my publisher James Lumsden-Cook – Bennion Kearny. Your time, patience, and willingness to answer my constant questions, at all hours of the day and night for the past two years, is truly appreciated. In turn, I would like to express my gratitude to David Griffiths for his excellent and patient(!) work as the golfer who you see photographed across this book.
Finally, to all of my friends and family, especially my wife Rebecca, son Alex, and parents Bob and Barbara; without your love and support, I wouldn’t have been able to undertake the many things that I have been fortunate enough to achieve.
About the Contributors
Chris Sells started working as the official golf analyst for the English Golf Union in 2001. Sixteen years ago, he conceived the StrokeAverage.com approach to game improvement, and over time his reputation has grown to the point where he is now regarded by peers as a leading contributor to the game of golf, with a full understanding of how to support players in becoming winners.
He was a key part of Paul McGinley’s winning 2014 Ryder Cup team providing Paul with data analysis before and during the tournament. He works with, and has worked with, players at the top of their game on the European Tour, PGA Tour, LET and LPGA. The StrokeAverage.com client list speaks for itself. Foreword
I am delighted Kristian Baker has decided to write this book on the golf swing. Also, I am honoured to be asked to write the foreword.
Kristian is a PGA professional, based at Wentworth Club for the past 20 years. He is passionate about teaching and helping players of all standards to achieve their full potential, including my son Jamie!
The teaching methods as explained in the book are uncomplicated, easy-to-understand and are based on time-proven fundamentals whilst also incorporating modern science and technology. I believe Kristian’s book offers much more than many modern day golf books because of its broader content.
Kristian is a highly regarded member of the Wentworth golf staff and has played a major role in the successful Golf Scholarship Scheme at the Club. Ryder Cup Player Ross Fisher and others have achieved national and international success through this renowned initiative.
Reading the book will not necessarily guarantee Ryder Cup status to all, however by applying Kristian’s methods and ideas I am confident the reader will become a better player.
Bernard Gallacher, O.B.E.
Introduction
What do you have in common with Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth, Lydia Ko, and Jason Day? You are all looking for that ‘something’ which makes you the best you can be, and which gives you the greatest opportunity for success.
Every golfer, at every level, seeks knowledge on how to improve – and this book will help you do that. This book draws upon both my experiences, and those of established golf professionals and experts I have worked with, and summarises our knowledge in a format to help you improve.
If you are a tour player wanting to move into the top 50, a professional wanting to secure a tour card, or an amateur wanting to compete better in club competitions – this is the book for you.
Coaching winning
So, how do you get better at golf?
Now, that’s a very interesting question and one that many golfers ask themselves on a weekly basis. In turn, if there were a simple answer, we would all be competing for that top spot!
To start with, I’m going to make one very big assumption, namely that becoming a better golfer means you want to score lower. This will seem like a very obvious statement to many but, for a few, getting better might just be hitting it straighter, longer, or just ‘liking’ the look of their golf swing.
Essentially, as a coach, I want to help a student achieve all of these things. For me, though, the biggest measure of success (and by far the most important and enjoyable part) is seeing players score lower. We may often play for the pure pleasure of the game but, even under these circumstances, most players are looking to go around the course in as few shots as possible. Competitive or not, does anyone really enjoy playing a poor round of golf? That is the challenge of the game – to always be better than before. In order to coach a player to achieve this, there needs to be a system. We will come to this system, in detail, shortly.
In order to reinforce my teaching, and cement understanding, I aim to offer as much scientific, factual evidence as possible. Evidence-based coaching is, in my view, the most effective way to coach.
If you can’t measure it, you can’t coach it.
Sir Clive Woodward, England Rugby’s World Cup Winning Coach.
This is a great phrase and resonates strongly with my view and experience of coaching over the last 20 years. If we don’t accurately know and understand what has actually happened…
